A suspected coronavirus was found in a Swiss plane that landed in Zurich-Kloten. The airport activated the pandemic plan and parked the aircraft in a place reserved for this scenario.

The aircraft concerned is an A330 which landed in Zurich at 10:17 am from New York on Monday, said Swiss spokesman Florian Flamig about information published by several media.
The suspect case concerns a member of the crew who was not on duty, however. According to an airport spokesperson, the passengers were subjected to initial medical examinations. The results are not yet available. In such cases, passengers cannot leave the aircraft, which is isolated.

Negative laboratory tests so far

Suspicious cases are referred for review to the National Reference Center for Emerging Viral Infections (CRIVE) based in Geneva. It has so far analyzed 130 samples taken from patients suspected of having been infected by the coronavirus, said Monday the media service of the Geneva University Hospitals (HUG).
If a test turns out to be positive, the Federal Office of Public Health (FOPH) will immediately inform the media. The federal office also assured that the population would be immediately informed if a case of coronavirus had to be confirmed in Switzerland.

Moderate use of the emergency line

The coronavirus emergency telephone line put into service by the FOPH last Thursday has recorded a good thousand calls since then. The figure was supplied to Keystone-ATS by Medgate, which manages the operation of the line.
The use of this service is qualified as “moderate”. Compared to the 2009 swine flu hotline, calls are three times fewer.
“People want to be informed, but are not worried,” said Cedric Berset, communications manager at Medgate. Most of the information requested relates to travel to countries affected by the coronavirus.

Questions about the risk of infection

Another concern noted by Medgate is the risk of infection in Switzerland. Finally, those who call want to learn about the preventive measures to adopt, also in the affected countries, especially in China.
The telephone line tells them in which countries cases of coronavirus infection have been confirmed. Callers are also advised that the risk of infection is greatest only when symptoms of the disease appear 14 days after traveling to an affected area or after close contact with an infected person.
To avoid transmission, it is advisable to apply the usual hygiene measures: wash your hands with soap and avoid touching your mouth, nose and eyes. In addition, crowds and people with respiratory diseases should be avoided if possible.
