Inmates of prisons and preventive detention centers were easy prey of death during 2020, according to a complaint by Carolina Girón, director of the Venezuelan Observatory of Prisons (OVP) if “I have a malnourished population, any disease is going to make them easy prey, during the pandemic access to food has been very limited for the private sector”, said.
In 2020, more prisoners died from diseases than from prison violence, of the 59 inmates who died, 52 were from diseases, six from violence inside jails and one from suicide. According to the figures that LA PRENSA recorded daily, in the David Viloria Penitentiary, better known as Uribana, nine inmates died, while in the Fénix-Lara Penitentiary Community there were 33, followed by the Cicpc where 9 inmates died, 2 in Polilara , two in the PNB and four in the Detachment 121 of the GNB.
The death of José Venancio Carrero Márquez, 37, was the last that occurred during 2020, one of the most lethal years for prisons, since 2019 registered 46 deceased inmates during twelve months, that is to say that the final year had a rise with 13 deaths.
It was learned that José Venancio died on December 29 of alleged tuberculosis and anemia within the Fénix Lara Penitentiary Community. The inmate’s body was not removed by his mourners and was transferred to a common grave.
José Venancio had been detained since November 2018 for the crime of drug trafficking, which occurred in Guasdualito, Apure state. The man was transferred to Fénix on May 6 of last year, but his health deteriorated and he spent 22 days in the prison’s Nursing area, as he felt bad and it was on December 29 at dawn that he died.
Like José, Aníbal José Oviedo Gómez, 29, died, inmate of Uribanaapparently had tuberculosis and was malnourished. In March, the inmate began to feel very weak and little by little his condition became more critical until he died.His relatives said that during the three years he was held in Uribana, he lost around 40 kilos, as they reported that the diet in the prison was “fatal”.
Tuberculosis killed the life of Víctor Alexander Durán Barreto, 56, nicknamed “Caín guaro”, who was imprisoned for around two years and nine months and lasted a few days in Fénix.
Six prisoners of liberty died for prison fights inside the prisons and police cells. In October, Jonathan Guevara (26) was strangled by his cellmate and hid his body under a bed for two days. The incident occurred in cell 1 of the Phoenix Reflection area, Jonathan had an argument with Ender Ramos (58), a cellmate, apparently in the middle of the fight Ender grabbed Jonathan by the neck and strangled him.
