Giant African snail detected in Argentina; alert for health risk


#In the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, a new alert emerged in #Argentina, now due to the presence of giant african snail that can cause effects on the health of people, according to the #National #Service of #Health and #Food #Quality (#Senasa) of the #South #American country.

“This type of snail can carry nematodes (parasites) that are harmful to human health. #That is why it is recommended not to touch them and to handle them with caution ”.

“From an environmental point of view they are also very harmful because due to their speed of reproduction and their lack of natural predators they can become a pest in a very short time. #And as they grow very fast and eat anything they can become a danger to crops ”.

The #First apparition of this issue took place in #Puerto #Iguazú #Misiones, in #December 2010; then, in the municipality of #Wanda, on #April 10, 2019.

#What to do if a giant #African snail is found?

The #Argentine authorities indicated measures for the population in case a giant #African snail was found.

  • #Do not touch the giant #African snail.
  • #Avoid the contact with slime snail, especially with eyes, nose and mouth.
  • #Wash vegetables with drinking water.
  • #If you touched the snail, wash hands immediately. #Do it also after touching the surfaces that may have been in contact with the snail drool.
  • #Do not eat snails.
  • #Do not use them as bait, pet or ornament.
  • #Do not use poisons against the snail, as they can affect children, pets or native fauna.
  • #Remove debris from the garden wood, #Construction materials, tejas or any element that can be used as refuge by the snail
  • #If necessary, take the snails with waterproof gloves, place them in a bag, crush them and bury them. #Gloves should also be buried or burned
  • #Do not allow children to participate in the capture of snails.
  • #Do not transfer the giant #African snail to other areas.
