Coronavirus | UK approves AstraZeneca and Oxford vaccine

The UK regulatory agency has approved the COVID-19 vaccine that has been jointly developed by pharmaceutical company #AstraZeneca and the #University of #Oxford, as reported by the #Ministry of #Health on #Wednesday. The #British country thus becomes the first in the world to give the green light to the remedy from #AstraZeneca and #Oxford and therefore, alongside #Pfizer, has two vaccines available to continue its vaccination strategy.

“The #Government has accepted today the recommendation of the #Regulatory #Agency for #Medicines and #Health #Products (MHRA, for its acronym in #English) to authorize the use of the COVID-19 vaccine from the #University of #Oxford and #AstraZeneca ”, said the #Ministry of #Health. “The decision comes after rigorous clinical trials and a thorough analysis of the data by experts, who have concluded that the vaccine meets their strict safety standards ”, he added.

#With two vaccines available, the UK will pursue its vaccination campaign, ensuring that the #National #Health #Service (NHS) “has a clear plan and decades of experience with large-scale vaccination programs”. “#Now the NHS will put its extensive preparations into action for the vaccine inoculation of the #University of #Oxford and #AstraZeneca.”

The #Ministry of #Health has stressed that “with two approved vaccines, it will be possible to vaccinate a greater number of people who are at greater risk, protecting them from the disease and reducing mortality and hospitalizations.”

#Vaccine “winning formula”

The announcement comes after #AstraZeneca CEO #Pascal #Soriot said this weekend that his team #He had located the “winning formula” for his vaccine to reach the effectiveness percentages that the #Pfizer / #BioNTech and #Modera antidotes also have, 95% and 94%, respectively.

#How is it different from #Pfizer and #Moderna?

#However, the composition of the #Oxford and #AstraZeneca vaccine is radically different from that of #Pfizer / BIoNTech and #Moderna. #While the two #Americans are made from messenger RNA, #AstraZeneca’s antidote is made from a genetically modified virus. #Its different forms of production make the drug do not need such extreme storage media as messenger RNA vaccines, which need to be stored at minus 80 degrees and therefore its distribution will be cheaper.

#Effectiveness of the remedy against the new strain

#Regarding the new strain that is hitting the UK and spreading around the world, the CEO of the company said in The #Sunday #Times that his vaccine “should be effective”, although he indicated that “there is still no certainty about it.”

#Very worrying situation in the UK

The approval of this vaccine by the #United #Kingdom comes at a time when the #British country is experiencing the worst days of the pandemic, since day after day it sets a record of daily infections due to the new strain detected, a highly contagious variant of the virus.

#Only in the last 24 hours, #British authorities reported 53,153 cases of coronavirus in a single day. The total of positives rises to 2,382,865, with more than 71,500 deaths, after registering 414 deaths the last day. #In the last week, 3,260 people have died in the UK from COVID-19.
