Observations: Bulls land 1st victory behind Zach LaVine, Otto Porter Jr.

The #Bulls avoided their first 0-4 start since 2007-08 with a 115-107 victory over the #Wizards #Tuesday night in #Washington. #Here are observations:

#Reserve review

#Otto #Porter #Jr. continued to shine in his reserve role. The veteran forward, playing against his old team, scored in double figures for the fourth straight time with 16 points. The #Bulls had seven in double figures.

#Porter has thrived in the wing-heavy lineup that coach #Billy #Donovan used despite #Thad #Young saying after the morning shootaround that he was available to make his season debut after battling a leg infection.

#Donovan has been starting #Lauri #Markkanen at power forward and then bringing him back at center in a small-ball lineup with #Porter, #Garrett #Temple, #Tomas #Satoransky and either #Chandler #Hutchison or #Coby #White.

#Porter has looked to exploit matchups in this lineup and also has shot the ball well in each game but the #Pacers.

#In the third and fourth quarters, #Donovan went to #Daniel #Gafford after #Markkanen exited for good with 8 minutes, 42 seconds left in the third after re-aggravating the calf contusion that made him a gametime decision. #Gafford provided his typical energy. #He blocked a shot and got to the line four times, making three.

#Turnover trouble averted

The #Bulls finally flashed ball security. They committed just 14 turnovers. The #Wizards didn’t place a lot of defensive pressure on the #Bulls or trap ballhandlers much, and the #Bulls did a better job of making the simple play.

They entered the night leading the league in a statistic you don’t want to — turnovers. They had committed 19.7 per game.

#Donovan has talked about wanting to play with pace. The #Bulls are doing that, but it hasn’t been a big factor in this disappointing development in the season’s early going.

“We had three in a row against #Golden #State where they kind of 2-2-1 pressed against us a little bit. #And it was just 1-on-1 and we lost the ball. #That wasn’t really from playing fast,” #Donovan said. “Do some of the turnovers come from that? #Possibly. #But we’ve had way too many live ball turnovers really not even in pressurized situations where we have to initiate offense better than that.”

#Backcourt battle

#Russell #Westbrook and #Bradley #Beal vs. #Coby #White and #Zach #LaVine.

#If you want to consider yourself among the game’s elite, you have to do it against players more accomplished than you.

#LaVine long has thought he deserves to earn the #All-Star status that #Beal already has. #White continues accepting the defensive challenges coming at him nightly.

#While #Westbrook did what he does, posting a triple double, #White finished with 18 points, six assists and five rebounds while committing just two turnovers. #It was perhaps #White’s most efficient outing thus far.

#LaVine ably dueled #Beal, who exited briefly in the third quarter to be checked for a concussion. #Beal returned and finished with 29 points. #But #LaVine posted 23 points, five rebounds, six assists and four steals.

#Even better? #Twice in the first half, #Patrick #Williams found himself switched onto #Beal and #Westbrook. #On both possessions, he held his own, displaying fancy footwork in the process.
