LONDON, #Dec 30 (#Reuters) – #Britain on #Wednesday became the first country in the world to approve the coronavirus vaccine developed by the #University of #Oxford and #AstraZeneca, in hopes such a swift initiative will help stem the wave of winter infections caused by a new highly contagious variant of the virus.

The #Boris #Johnson government, which has already commissioned 100 million doses of the vaccine, said it had accepted a recommendation from the #Medicines and #Health #Products #Regulatory #Agency (MHRA) to grant emergency authorization.

The decision is a boost for a vaccine that is considered essential for mass immunizations in the developing world, as well as in the #United #Kingdom, although it does not remove doubts about the data from the trials that make it unlikely that it will be approved as well. fast in the #European #Union or the #United #States.

“The NHS (#National #Health #Service) will be able to administer these injections into people’s arms at the speed that they can be manufactured,” #Health #Secretary #Matt #Hancock told #Sky #News.

“#Now also, with approval this morning, I am very confident that we can vaccinate enough vulnerable people by spring to see our way out of this pandemic.”

#Johnson called the approval a “triumph for #British science.”

#Hancock said hundreds of thousands of doses would be available next week for administration in the UK, which is already underway with the campaign for the vaccine developed by US drugmaker #Pfizer and its #German partner #BioNTech.

#Trials have shown that the #Oxford vaccine is less effective than the #Pfizer / #BioNTech vaccine, but, crucial for countries with more basic sanitary infrastructures, it can be stored and transported in normal freezers, rather than having to be preserved cold extreme at temperatures of -70 degrees #Celsius (-94 #Fahrenheit).

INDIA INTERESTED

#India is ready to start administering the new vaccine next month. The #Serum #Institute of #India (SII), the world’s largest producer of vaccines, has already manufactured some 50 million doses. #Chile is also interested.

The UK has set itself apart from other #Western countries with its fast track approach to vaccines. #In the case of the #Pfizer / #BioNTech vaccine, it gave the green light weeks before the EU’s #European #Medicines #Authority (EMA) did.

#An advisory body to the #British government recommended a change of course on #Wednesday to give as many people as possible a first dose of the coronavirus vaccine immediately, rather than giving the second booster dose in the shortest time possible.

#Uncertainty has revolved around the most effective dosing pattern for the #AstraZeneca / #Oxford vaccine since data was published last month showing a 90% success rate for a half dose followed by a full dose, but only the 62% – still more than enough for regulators – for two full doses.

#States want to ensure widespread public acceptance of a new vaccine in order to achieve so-called “herd immunity”, while facing anti-vaccine campaigns capable of rapidly spreading their messages through social media.

#Antonella #Viola, an immunologist at the #University of #Padua (#Italy), said that the divergence between regulatory bodies sends a “bad message” that misleads citizens.

“#While there is no question about the safety of the vaccine, efficacy is unclear, and too many errors and advertisements have complicated the interpretation of the data,” he said.

#But for some, the severity of the pandemic is enough to warrant swift action.

The pandemic has already killed 1.7 million people worldwide, wreaking havoc on the global economy and disrupting the normal lives of billions of people since it began in the #Chinese city of #Wuhan a year ago.

The UK and #South #Africa in particular are grappling with new variants of the coronavirus, which the #British government and scientists say are more contagious. #Many countries have responded by banning passenger flights and blocking trade.

“#To get out of this debacle, there is no alternative but for a significant majority of the population to carry a high level of neutralizing antibodies,” said #Danny #Altmann, professor of immunology at #Imperial #College #London.

“I suspect this (authorization) will speed things up by several months. #An immune population by spring is starting to look feasible.”

#AstraZeneca CEO #Pascal #Soriot told BBC radio that the UK should be able to vaccinate tens of millions of people by the end of the first quarter.
