#An emergency nurse at two US hospitals tested positive for COVID-19 despite receiving a #Pfizer vaccine against the virus. #Specialists note that this case shows that even with vaccines, the pandemic will not change instantly.

#Matthew W, 45, was vaccinated on #December 18, as posted on his #Facebook account. #She explained that her arm hurt that day, but she didn’t feel any other side effects.

#Six days later, on #Christmas #Eve, after working a shift in the COVID-19 unit, he began to feel shaking chills and later had muscle aches and fatigue.

The day after #Christmas, she decided to get a COVID-19 test at a hospital that came back positive.

“#It will not be a complete protection”

“#This is nothing unexpected. #If you work with the numbers, this is exactly what we would expect to happen if someone were exposed,” says #Christian #Ramers, infectious disease specialist with the #San #Diego #Family #Health #Centers network of medical centers.

#According to #Ramers, it is possible that #Matthew was infected before receiving the vaccine, since the incubation period it can be up to two weeks.

“#We know from clinical trials of the vaccine that it will take 10 to 14 days to begin to develop protection,” explains the doctor, highlighting that it is not the first case when a health worker becomes infected around the time he receives the vaccine.

#Ramers admits that these cases show that vaccination results are not immediate. #Even after you start receiving some protection, it will not be complete protection.

“#We believe that first dose gives around the 50%, and you need that second dose to get to 95%, “he says.

The doctor highlights that #Matthew’s story also shows that even with vaccines, the pandemic will not change instantly. #Plus, it’s a good reminder of why masks, hand washing, and other COVID protocols are important, even after getting vaccinated, he adds.

“#You hear health professionals being very optimistic that it will be the beginning of the end, but it will be a slow process, weeks to months, as we roll out the vaccine,” #Ramers was quoted as saying by ABC #News.
