#AstraZeneca’s #Emergency #Vaccine #Approval in the UK “is a game changer”, since it can be easily distributed, said the professor on #Wednesday #Andrew #Pollard, lead investigator of the trial at the #British pharmaceutical company and the #University of #Oxford.

“I think it changes the rules of the game because it is a vaccine that can be easily distributed. There are a large number of doses that are manufactured all over the world ”, said the #Director of the #Oxford #Vaccine #Group following the announcement of emergency approval in the UK. “#In the coming weeks we hope to hear more approvals in other parts of the world, which means that we can really start bringing the vaccine to all the vulnerable people in different populations to have the greatest possible impact, ”added the scientist.

The #United #Kingdom became the first country in the world to approve a coronavirus vaccine developed by the #University of #Oxford and #AstraZeneca while battling a large surge in cases driven by a highly contagious new variant of the virus.

The country has already ordered 100 million doses of the vaccine, and the government said that will begin to apply on #January 4.

#In trials, the vaccine has been found to be less effective than the one developed by #Pfizer of the #United #States and #BioNTech of #Germany, but, crucially for countries with a more basic health infrastructure, can be stored and transported in normal refrigeration, instead of -70 degrees celsius.

#Pollard noted that the first dose of the vaccine is effective in preventing many people from get seriously ill and end up in the hospital.

“The second dose is still needed, but if it is delayed, many more people may have been vaccinated and protected before reaching the second dose which is, we believe, important for durability.“, said.

The approval is a vindication of a vaccine that is considered essential for mass immunizations in the developing world and in #Britain.#But it has been haunted by questions about its trial data that make it unlikely it will be approved anytime soon in the #European #Union or the #United #States.

#Pollard also referred to “#Minor” side effects of the vaccine. “#Some people will feel like they have a mild viral illness the first day with arm pain, sometimes muscle aches and chills, but that usually goes away pretty quickly within the first week,” he said. “#And we really haven’t seen any major side effects in the nearly 40,000, in fact more than 40,000 people who have been vaccinated now.”

#Finally, the #British specialist said that “#Research continues” to collect more data on vaccine performance and on the efficacy in new strains of the coronavirus. “#It is a time to celebrate and have some optimism about where we have come today and move on”, #Pollard said. “#But we have to keep up this battle against the virus, not just here, but in all vaccine developers.”
