Boston Celtics come back from late 17-point deficit, Jayson Tatum scores 27 in 116-111 win over Pacers

A furious fourth quarter comeback saved the #Celtics after another sleepy third quarter as #Boston beat the #Pacers, 116-111, to salvage a split of a two-game series in #Indianapolis on #Tuesday night.

The #Pacers outscored the #Celtics, 37-25, in the third and even led by 17 points late in the quarter before #Boston came back with a burst at the beginning of the fourth. #Boston improved to 2-2 on the season.

#Jayson #Tatum led the #Celtics with 27 points, including 14 in the fourth quarter. #Three other #Celtics — #Jaylen #Brown (20), #Marcus #Smart (17), #Tristan #Thompson (14) and #Payton #Pritchard (10) — were in double figures, with #Thompson and #Tatum both recording double-doubles.

#Boston came out with energy on the defensive end and took an early lead behind eight points and seven rebounds from #Thompson in the first quarter. #After leading, 58-57, at halftime, the C’s were outscored by double digits in the third quarter for the third straight game and entered the fourth trailing by 11.

#Led by #Pritchard and #Tatum, the #Celtics went on an 11-0 run to tie the game before regaining the lead with 7:29 to go. The #Pacers cut the deficit to two twice in the final 1:01 but #Tatum sealed the win with two free throws with 14.8 seconds left.

#All five #Pacers starters finished in double figures, with #Victor #Oladipo leading the team with 24 points.

The #Celtics will return home #Wednesday for a matchup against the #Grizzlies before heading back on the road for a four-game trip to #Detroit, #Tampa (where the #Raptors are playing) and #Miami. #Tip-off against #Memphis is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.

STEVENS’ TAKE:

#Celtics coach #Brad #Stevens on the fourth-quarter comeback: “The #Pacers were playing exceptionally hard heading into that quarter. #That was as physical as a quarter in the third as I remember seeing in a long time. I thought our guys kept at it and we had a couple really good contributions from the bench, getting to some balls and some tips from behind. #Rob (#Williams) ran back in and got that rebound. There were several instances of really good effort. I don’t know what the lead was for them but it sure felt like it dissipated pretty quickly and then we were able to keep guarding. I think our bigs did a good job late being up on the screens on (#Victor) #Oladipo, helping us at the rim in a couple of cases.

“It’s a good team win. #That’s a good basketball team. #We’re not what we want to be but sometimes you’ve got to find a way to win.”
