BERLIN, #Dec 30 (#Reuters) – #Germany hopes the #European #Union will quickly approve the coronavirus vaccine developed by the #University of #Oxford and #Astrazeneca, which was licensed for use in the UK on #Wednesday, the country’s top immunization authority said. .
#Klaus #Cichutek, director of the #Paul #Ehrlich #Institute, said that, thanks to the EU’s ongoing review of the efficacy of the #Astrazeneca vaccine, it would be possible to make a quick decision once a formal application is submitted.
The #European #Medicines #Agency (EMA) had not received any such request as of #Wednesday morning, #Cichutek told reporters, but a debate in its councils would take place as soon as it arrives.
“#Once the application is submitted, a decision can be made quickly,” #Cichutek said at a news conference.
#German #Health #Minister #Jens #Spahn urged “a rapid and comprehensive review” of the #Astrazeneca vaccine by the EMA, in addition to the expected EU authorization of #Moderna’s vaccine in early #January.
A vaccine jointly developed by #Pfizer and #BioNTech is already being administered as part of an EU-wide vaccination campaign that began after #Christmas.
