Padres go all out, Cubs begin rebuilding and what’s next for MLB’s offseason

#After a slow start to the offseason, the #San #Diego #Padres have lit the hot stove with a couple of mega-trades for starting pitchers. #First, #San #Diego acquired 2018 #American #League #Cy #Young winner #Blake #Snell for prospects from the #Tampa #Bay #Rays. Then the #Padres turned around and added 2020 #National #League #Cy #Young runner-up #Yu #Darvish along with catcher #Victor #Caratini for right-hander #Zach #Davies and four young prospects in a mega-trade with a now-rebuilding #Chicago #Cubs. #As if that wasn’t enough, #San #Diego also made room on their schedule for a free agent signing by adding #Korean infield player #Ha-seong #Kim.

#Will #San #Diego’s holiday shopping be enough to catapult the #Padres above the #Los #Angeles #Dodgers as the team to beat in MLB? #Will the moves be the biggest buzz for any team this winter? #And what should the #Cubs do now that they’ve traded their ace? #We had ESPN baseball experts #Bradford #Doolittle, #Jesse #Rogers and #David #Schoenfield answer these questions and more.

#Have the #Padres surpassed the #Dodgers as a team to beat in the #National #League (and all of MLB) next season?

#Doolittle: #No, but that is a very high bar. The #Dodgers are a monster, but the #Padres have positioned themselves, along with the #Braves, as the #National #League teams most likely to take advantage of an offseason in #Los #Angeles.

#Rogers: #To say that it is the team to beat is a bit strong, but they certainly see a window for it at the moment. #It includes the inevitable hangover from the #Dodgers, which doesn’t just speak of winning the championship in a grueling 2020 season. #Remember, #Los #Angeles has been on this mission for quite some time. The “hangover” has been in the making for years. #That doesn’t mean the #Dodgers are going to sit back, but either way the moves the #Padres are making almost assure them another playoff appearance, especially in an expanded playoff situation, which may or may not come. #One thing became obvious last #October, considering there were multiple ‘bullpen games’ in the playoffs: #Three top-tier pitchers aren’t enough. #You need four, especially with limited innings pitched in 2020. The #Padres are going strong as well as going strong.

#Schoenfield: #It’s fun, it’s exciting, and I would love to move to #San #Diego and become a full-season season ticket holder for the #Padres and eat a lot of fish tacos, but the #Dodgers are still the team to beat, as well as the deepest and most talented. #Although #Blake #Snell and #Yu #Darvish are obviously huge acquisitions, especially if #Snell can get close to his 2018 level and #Darvish remains at the level he’s been since the second half of 2019, but keep in mind that the #Dodgers won the division. for six games in the short season. #Also note that several #Padres are about to return or have to prove that they can be that good again, including #Dinelson #Lamet (2.09 ERA), #Wil #Myers (159 OPS +), #Eric #Hosmer (131 OPS +) and #Jake #Cronenworth (128 OPS +). #Hell, even #Manny #Machado is coming off having the best OPS of his career, 125 points higher than his career average.

#We’ve heard all winter that the #Mets were going to be the busiest team, but did the #Padres just win the title of ‘2020-21 offseason champions?’

#Doolittle: #We should close that discussion as long as the top half dozen free agents are not signed and the commercial market has only just started to boil. #But it seems unlikely the #Padres will get anything more than passing grades for AJ #Preller’s now-winning effort that actually started with the 2020 trade deadline.

#Rogers: #Yes. #Even undercover teams like the #Giants and #Blue #Jays were considered candidates, but once again, #Preller steals the headlines. #It’s a reminder of the middle of the 2014 season, when #Billy #Beane got #Jon #Lester, #Jason #Hammel and #Jeff #Samardzija instead. #Just when he thought he was done, he got one more deal. #That’s #Preller right now.

#Schoenfield: #Ask the 2019 #Phillies how winning the offseason benefits. #Look, it’s tough to beat #Snell and #Darvish, but the #Mets still have days on the calendar and money in #Steve #Cohen’s wallet. (#Do you think he actually carries a wallet with him? #For example, when he goes to a #Subway restaurant, does he take $ 20 out of his wallet or just use an app on his phone?) The #Mets could still get two from #Trevor #Bauer, #George #Springer and DJ #LeMahieu and that could make them offseason champs.

#What should the #Cubs do from here after trading #Yu #Darvish?

#Doolittle: #Give up. … #Seriously, do you know which team has had the best offseason in the NL #Central? The #Brewers, and only because they haven’t traded #Josh #Hader yet. The #Cubs should at least have stood their ground this winter in hopes of building business value with some of their hitters who had bad seasons. #But if they aren’t going to try, then trading everyone else for pennies is a logical progression.

#Rogers: #Calculate when is the right time to move #Craig #Kimbrel and #Kris #Bryant. #Now or at the #July deadline. Then come this spring, they must sign #Javier Báez to a long-term deal and build around him while #Anthony #Rizzo should land a new contract in #July after a solid first half of the season. #Those moves could see the #Cubs compete again for the division as early as 2022.

#Schoenfield: The player who would return the most value right now is #Kyle #Hendricks from signing through 2023 (with a 2024 option) at a reasonable rate, but I’m not expecting a full reset here, not when the rest of the division is this weak. #It might only take 79 wins to win the #Central, and you can do it with #Hendricks, #Baez and #Kris #Bryant.

#What should #Los #Angeles do to respond to the #San #Diego shopping spree?

#Doolittle: #Suppress yawning to begin with while you wait for the market to find its level. The #Dodgers are not in an arms race with the #Padres. They are the electric rabbit in front of the panting greyhounds that are chasing them. #Given the slow pace of the offseason outside of #San #Diego, the #Dodgers can afford to wait for the few free agents who are a clear upgrade to see if they want to beat the best offer on the market. #And they can select any type of #Sonny #Gray-like player they value on desperate teams wanting to shed payroll commitments. #You’re in a good place when doing nothing is a perfectly viable option.

#Rogers: #Make a trade for #Bryant. They have a hole at third base and will have a motivated player in their final year of contract. #Plus, after winning the #World #Series, it’s not a bad thing to change the mix a bit at the clubhouse. #After that, they should do what they always do, keep winning and let the chips fall where they can next #October. They are playing with the money in the house. #Nobody repeats, but they could do it.

#Schoenfield: #Agree here with #Brad: They don’t have to do anything and they won’t feel pressured into some kind of fancy trade or free agent signing just to keep up with the #Padres. #That said, they need a third baseman, whether it’s re-signing #Justin #Turner or doing something more creative (signing DJ #LeMahieu, getting #Francisco #Lindor and putting #Corey #Seager on third base, or trading for #Nolan #Arenado, though not. I think it’s a move the #Dodgers are going to make given the money potentially left on #Arenado’s contract.)

#What does it mean for #Darvish and #Snell to go to the #Padres for #Trevor #Bauer and the rest of the free agent market?

#Doolittle: #You’d think that takes the #Padres out of the mix, although #Preller’s enthusiasm can tend toward the limitless once he starts making moves. #Overall, though, it probably has little impact, and if there are tangible consequences for #Bauer in particular, they will be positive. The options available to acquire a starter from the front of the rotation have been reduced to two, but the number of teams searching for such a creature has decreased to just one.

#Rogers: #That thins the market a bit, but still, it won’t take away payday. #Let’s face it, a team is being eliminated. #Bauer will get his contract. #So will #George #Springer and JT #Realmuto, but midlevels are always in danger. #But the #Padres’ moves shouldn’t affect #Bauer as much.

#Schoenfield: The #Padres were never going to be the highest bidder on a long-term contract, not with their market size in addition to the #Machado contract and the desire to eventually pay off #Fernando #Tatis #Jr. #So I don’t think that will change much for #Bauer. #You can still land a great one-year contract if you want to do that or, more likely, a long-term offer from the #Mets, #Angels or any other team.

#Is acquiring #Blake #Snell and #Yu #Darvish (and #Ha-seong #Kim) on the same day the stove’s biggest shock since …?

#Doolittle: #Remember the two-day stretch in #January 2018 when the #Brewers got #Christian #Yelich instead, then signed #Lorenzo #Cain. #As a #Royals fan, it also reminds me of the three-day stretch when #Kansas #City signed #Wally #Joyner and traded #Bret #Saberhagen to the #Mets. #It was supposed to be a hard hit, but it wasn’t.

#Schoenfield: I thought of the 2009 #Yankees, when they signed CC #Sabathia, #Mark #Teixeira and AJ #Burnett, but that happened in a few weeks (#Burnett signed on #December 12, #Sabathia on #December 20 and #Teixeira on #January 6). The 2014 #Yankees signed #Brian #McCann on #December 3, #Jacoby #Ellsbury and #Hiroki #Kuroda on #December 7 (although #Kuroda was a new signing), #Carlos #Beltran a couple of weeks later and then #Masahiro #Tanaka in #January. #But for a busy week, let’s go to the #Marlins of 2011, who signed #Heath #Bell (after three consecutive 40-save seasons), #José #Reyes (after a .337 season and batting title) and #Mark #Buehrle (then a 3.8 WAR season) in five days at winter meetings.
