4-year-old Central New York boy dies after fighting Covid: He was a ‘little spitfire’

UTICA, NY – A four-year-old #Utica boy has died after being hospitalized with #Covid-19, according to family friend.

#Xavier #Harris, youngest son of #Chantel #Brooks, died the morning after #Christmas, according to family friend #Brandie #Reid, who was speaking for #Brooks who is grief-stricken and working to plan a funeral for #Wednesday.

#Little #Xavier or “Xavy” #Harris had been sick and was in the hospital, but had been improving, #Reid said. #His fever had gone down and on #Christmas #Eve it looked like he’d be released on #Christmas #Day but he wasn’t. #On #Saturday, the boy suddenly died of cardiac arrest, she said.

#Reid said #Xavier’s family said he was healthy before contracting the coronavirus. #Syracuse.com | The #Post #Standard independently confirmed the child had died of #Covid.

#Children rarely die of #Covid-19.

#Children make up 0.07% of all #Covid-19 deaths, according to a report this month by the #American #Academy of #Pediatrics and the #Children’s #Hospital #Association based on data from 42 states. #In all, 172 children nationwide have died of #Covid, the report said.

#In #New #York state, nine children 9 years old or younger died of #Covid, according to the state dashboard. #Eleven people who were 10 to 19 years old died, the state reported.

#Reid said #Brooks wants people to know her son died after coming down with the virus and that #Covid doesn’t only kill elderly people or those in nursing homes. #She wants people to take it seriously, #Reid said, and wear their masks and socially distance.

“She said her son was here for a reason, and she believes that’s so people don’t take the virus lightly and think they will be fine if they are young,’’ #Reid said.

#Reid said she didn’t know when #Xavier had been admitted to the hospital or how long he had been sick. #She contacted #Brooks when she saw her #Facebook post about her son being in the hospital. #Brooks told her after #Xavier died that her young son had been fighting the coronavirus.

“He’s just a little spitfire,’’ she said. “Very active with a lady-killer smile.”

#Xavier was joking around at the hospital, and didn’t want to take his medicine, #Reid said. #He seemed to feel better, she said.

#Brooks didn’t think she could have more children when she became pregnant with #Xavier and so she always called him her “miracle baby,’’ #Reid said.

The #Brooks family is devastated, #Reid said. #Brooks, a single mother, has two other sons who are 13 and 9, and works as a teaching assistant in the #Utica city schools, #Reid said. #Brooks also is in college, and expects to graduate in #May.

#Reid said she and #Brooks worked together at #Head #Start several years ago, and became friends. #She last saw #Xavier at the grocery store with his mom about a year ago, but she and #Brooks talked on #Facebook quite often and shared photos and stories of their children.

#Reid said many people have reached out to her wanting to help the family.

A fundraising campaign has been set up by #Reid to help #Brooks with funeral expenses. #More than $22,000 has already been donated as of this afternoon.
