House prices rise rapidly in the United States

WASHINGTON (AP) – The coronavirus pandemic has forced millions of #Americans to work from home and has reduced other activities such as eating out, going to the movies or visiting gyms. #That is leading more people to seek homes with more space for a home office, a larger kitchen, or space to exercise.

“The data from the past few months is consistent with the view that COVID has encouraged potential buyers to move from urban apartments to suburban homes,” said #Craig #Lazzara, managing director of S&P #Dow #Jones #Indices.

#Home prices in the #United #States rose in #October by their most in more than six years, as a pandemic-fueled shopping rush brings the supply of available-for-sale properties to record lows.

#That combination of strong demand and limited supply pushed home prices up 7.9% in #October compared to 12 months ago, according to the S&P #CoreLogic #Case-Shiller 20-City #Home #Price #Index released yesterday. #That’s the biggest annual increase since #June 2014.

The 19 cities monitored reported higher price gains year-over-year in #October than in #September, #Lazzara said. #Detroit was unable to report all of its data due to delays related to the coronavirus shutdowns.

#For the seventeenth month in a row, the biggest price hike was in #Phoenix, where home prices were up 12.7% from a year earlier. #Seattle followed with 11.7% and #San #Diego with 11.6%.
