Ryan Hilinski enters NCAA Transfer Portal

#South #Carolina football quarterback #Ryan #Hilinski has entered the NCAA #Transfer #Portal. A sophomore, #Hilinski played in two games this season and completed 4-of-6 passes for 34 yards. #He saw action against both #Vanderbilt and #Texas A&M this season coming off of a 2019 campaign where he was the team’s starting quarterback.

#Hilinski, a former four-star prospect who made his way to #Carolina from #California, found himself atop the depth chart after senior #Jake #Bentley broke his foot in the first game of the 2019 season. #Hilinski went on to start the rest of the season for the #Gamecocks and went 4-7 as a starting quarterback.

#Hilinski completed 58.1 percent of his passes as a true freshman for 2,357 yards with 11 touchdowns and five interceptions. #He was sixth in the SEC averaging 214.3 passing yards per game, which was also tops among SEC freshmen.

#Going into the 2019 season, it was assumed that #Bentley would be the starting quarterback, and he won that job going into the year. #Hilinski, however, won the backup quarterback job over #Dakereon #Joyner, who eventually moved to wide receiver. #Bentley went down for the season in the first game of the season against #North #Carolina injuring his foot on the last offensive play of the game.

#Hilinski took control of the offense and became just the sixth true freshman to start at quarterback in a #South #Carolina uniform. #After completing his first 12 passes against #Charleston #Southern in his first start, he went on to go 24-of-30 for 282 yards with a pair of touchdowns in the game. #He followed that up by earning SEC #Freshman of the #Week honors going 36-for-57, 324-yard, two-touchdown performance against #Alabama.

#That’s when his season went a bit sideways as he started to experience injury problems. #He had shoulder soreness entering the going into the next game against #Missouri, and went 13-for-30 in the team’s loss. #His shoulder wasn’t healthy until after the bye week and he had a great first half going 15-of-20 against #Georgia following the break. #But he suffered a knee injury and sat out the rest of the game and was never quite the same the rest of the season.

#Hilinski was locked this offseason in a quarterback competition with #Colorado #State transfer #Collin #Hill, who joined his former head coach #Mike #Bobo, who was hired as offensive coordinator, at #South #Carolina. #Hill won the job and #Hilinski never got much of a chance in games in a #Gamecock uniform in his second year in the program.

#Ultimately, #Hilinski decided to pursue an opportunity elsewhere and has entered the NCAA #Transfer #Portal.
