Auburn moving defensive analyst to on-field role for Citrus Bowl

#With #Auburn’s staff down a coach for the #Citrus #Bowl following the firing of head coach #Gus #Malzahn, acting head coach #Kevin #Steele announced #Wednesday that the program will move one of its off-field analysts to an on-field role for #Friday’s game against #Northwestern.

#Defensive analyst #Brandon #Fisher, who joined #Auburn’s staff in #March, will serve as one of the #Tigers’ on-field assistants for the bowl game, which is set to kick off #Friday at noon CT in #Orlando, #Fla.

#Fisher is the son of former NFL head coach #Jeff #Fisher and has been in coaching for the better part of the last decade, with much of his experience coming at the NFL level. #He began his coaching career in 2011 as an assistant secondary coach for the #Detroit #Lions before joining his father’s staff with the #Rams. #Fisher worked his way up to defensive backs coach for the #Rams in 2015, serving in that role for two seasons before the franchise cleaned house and brought in a new coaching staff.

#Fisher then took a couple years off from coaching before spending 2019 as the defensive coordinator at #Southern #Utah and then coming to #Auburn as a defensive analyst, where he has also helped run the #Tigers’ scout team defense in practices.

#Moving #Fisher onto the active coaching roster for the #Citrus #Bowl, #Steele said, is less about him actually coaching a position and more about putting #Fisher in a role where he’s permitted to use a headset and help with gameday communications.

“Gameday, we needed him on the headset because we are down one with the headset, obviously,” #Steele said.

#While #Auburn last week hired #Bryan #Harsin as its new head coach, #Steele will remain acting head coach against #Northwestern while still handling defensive coordinator duties. #Steele said because of the shortened time for bowl prep — with #Auburn’s players returning to campus on #Dec. 26, leaving just one week of practices before the game — he chose not to elevate another assistant coach to acting defensive coordinator for the #Citrus #Bowl.

“I’m the defensive coordinator,” #Steele said. “We have a head coach, so I’m the defensive coordinator, and I think it was just better to keep it the way we’ve done it all year.”
