Exploding smartphone prices extend time between new purchases

The ever-increasing prices for high-end smartphones and the high cost of mobile phone contracts seem to make customers less likely to buy a new device. This is based on surveys from the US, according to which more and more time passes between the respective new purchase of a smartphone. In Germany, the prices of the devices have recently tightened significantly.

Apple has reached the 1000 euro mark for the first time with the iPhone X and meanwhile offer with Samsung and Huawei also the two other leading Smartphone manufacturers of the world their top Smartphones in each case at prices from scarcely under to even clearly over 1000 euro. At the same time, technical development has not continued as rapidly as before for many years, which is why many customers see little reason to switch to a new model every year or even every six months.

Almost three years have passed between smartphone purchases

This trend is now confirmed by a survey by the market research firm Strategy Analytics, in which one asked 2500 American smartphone owners for their opinion. On average, at least in the US according to the survey, now 33 months pass before a mobile phone customer grows a new smartphone. Before "usually" passed just two years, until the US customers bought new smartphones.
In the future, Strategy Analytics expects that the high and rising prices of new smartphones with 5G support in the coming years will reinforce the trend towards longer buyout intervals. Because manufacturers have placed greater emphasis on the profitability of their smartphone sales, the increased sales and therefore longer time between new purchases at the same time the sales figures.

The prices of 5G smartphones would probably be the main hurdle for their purchase, even if one in four respondents, according to Strategy Analytics believe that the support for the new mobile technology in their next smartphone is quite relevant. According to market researchers, only around seven percent of respondents said they would invest in an expensive model with a price of $ 1,000 or more on their next smartphone purchase.
