Smart now only more electric

Smart keeps its promise from 2017 and is now switching exclusively to the battery electric drive technology. The last combustion models were sold in a special limited edition. To coincide with the electric restart, the Daimler subsidiary is presenting its optically and digitally completely revised fortwo (coupé and convertible) and forfour models at the IAA in Frankfurt (public days 12 to 22 September 2019).

design

When revamping the design, Smart has clearly aligned itself with the last showcars. The front of the new electric EQ models now distinguishes between fortwo (2.70 x 1.56 x 1.54 m) and forfour (3.50 x 1.66 x 1.55 m) for the first time. Where the four-seater wears a downwardly open grill ("A-shape") with optional integrated fog lights, known from the show car Vision EQ fortwo, the two-door cars stay with the well-known friendly face with V-Grill. The Smart lettering is now – as in the early days – again on the grill. Furthermore, the new models have extremely striking full-LED headlamps (optional). As with the studies forease and forease +, three large light-emitting diode elements are used. The tail lights of the modernized models have been redesigned. Hundreds of LED lighting elements now form a conspicuous light signature in the familiar basic form. What has remained are the short overhangs, the wheel arches on display and numerous customization options.

equipment structure

The new payroll structure is quite radical: The base model comes with three lines to choose from: passion, pulse and prime, You can choose one of three equipment packages: Advanced, Premium or Exclusive and finally the preferred color. That's it. Here, however, the choice is now difficult, because the new models come with new colors. The fortwo is now available for the Tridion cell and bodypanels carmine red and gold beige such as lime green only for the bodypanels. When forfour stands ice white new for Bodypanels and Tridion in the color chart. Also in the interior there are new designs of the cover fabrics and an additional color option for the equipment lines passion and pulse. Also new are four wheel designs. Each in silver and bi-color they are available in 15 or 16 inches for the equipment lines.

inner space

The redesigned interior scores above all with extended storage options and a newly conceived operating concept. The most noticeable innovation, apart from the new center console, is above all the much larger media system connect including 8 inch touch screen. The system uses a seamless smartphone integration instead of a built-in GPS or expensive services. According to Smart, the customer not only gets a cheaper infotainment solution, but also an intuitive and upgradable solution. Because as soon as he switches to a new smartphone or through a software update new apps are available, they immediately pull in the car.

Fittingly there is also the new one EQ Control App and the "ready to" services. These applications allow the following features to be displayed or enabled via the smartphone: status information about the car, remote electrical charging, finding and navigating a free parking space, sharing the car with friends and family, or getting back to the car.

drive

The drive has not changed. The e-motor in the rear continues to produce 60 kW (82 hp) and offers a torque of 160 Nm. Smart gives 4.8 seconds for the traffic light sprint of the EQ fortwo Coupé from 0 to 60 km / h. The maximum speed is limited at 130 km / h (see table with technical data below). Since the three models are mainly in the city on the road, the manufacturer offers a fairly compact high-voltage battery. Their capacity of 17.6 kWh allows a rather modest range of 159 kilometers (according to NEDC). That should be enough for most smart drivers. Especially since in stop-and-go traffic energy can be recovered through recuperation. With the optional 22 kW on-the-fly charger, the new models recharge from 10 to 80 percent range in less than 40 minutes without relying on rare DC charging stations. An average daily mileage to recharge the three city runabouts on a conventional 230 V outlet in just over 3.5 hours.

Availability and conclusion

The revised Smart EQ models will be available shortly after the IAA and will be available in late 2019 / early 2020. Prices are not yet fixed, but should remain at about the (high) level of the predecessor. With the switch to the purely electric drive, Smart is taking a radical step. But for the brand, this is only logical, because the compact manoeuvrable models fit perfectly into the city. Now only the customers have to play along. Because in addition to the much higher prices (compared to the gasoline), the still inadequate infrastructure should prove to be a drag. Without a garage including wallbox or socket, charging for people living in apartments is rather complicated. And these form the absolute majority in many cities.
