SALABERRY-DE-VALLEYFIELD – A building at the General Dynamics defense and tactical systems factory was destroyed on Friday in Salaberry-de-Valleyfield, Montérégie.
The small building, where explosive powder is handled, would have been destroyed by an explosion that occurred in the morning, said the director of the Salaberry-de-Valleyfield fire safety service, Michel Ménard.
He assured that there is no risk of spread, the company taking “a lot of precautions”.
General Dynamics is a creator and manufacturer of ammunition adapted to the needs of the armed forces and police organizations. The company works in particular with the American army.
Ménard said a team of firefighters was fighting the flames in defensive mode. According to him, no injuries were reported.
Robert Poirier, a citizen of Salaberry-de-Valleyfield, told TVA Nouvelles that a “big boom” was heard about a kilometer away.
The company declined to comment.
