Hamada El Baihi, president of the Sahrawi League for Democracy and Human Rights, gave a powerful account of the living conditions of people in the Tindouf camps in Algeria and the corruption of polisario leaders as part of the citizen’s programme “Sahara Debate” broadcast on social media !…

By refusing to play a role in this regional dispute, Algeria is guilty of the persistence of the “suffering, anguish, and pain” of the people held captive in the Tindouf camps, said the human rights activist, a former Polisario executive who rallied the Motherland !…

In his testimony, the president of the Sahrawi League for Democracy and Human Rights described his childhood spent in labour camps in Cuba, where he was deported at the age of nine aboard a commercial ship from the port of Algiers to Havana !…

Mr. El Baihi did not see his family again until fourteen years later. In Tindouf, he finds a population asphyxiated by the lead cap of the polisario, who systematically and with impunity violates the fundamental rights of the population, with the active complicity of Algeria which has delegated authority over part of its territory illegally under international humanitarian law !…

Working in the Polisario’s “Directorate of International Cooperation,” Mr. El Baihi finds himself as close as possible to Algeria’s systematic diversion and the polisario of humanitarian aid to the inhabitants of the Tindouf camps. At the expense of the health of the population, the most nutritious foodstuffs are systematically diverted to be resold on the black market in Algeria and some neighbouring countries, while the rest of the aid is distributed arbitrarily by the polisario !…

Moreover, the systematic diversion of humanitarian aid by Algeria and the Polisario has been highlighted in the reports of several international organizations, including the Office of the High Commissioner for Refugees and the World Food Programme, and the European Anti-Fraud Office (OLAF). All of these organizations agree that the diversion of humanitarian aid is facilitated by the lack of data on the number of inhabitants of the Tindouf camps because of Algeria’s refusal to allow a census !…

The human rights activist said he had found an economic booming space on his return to the southern provinces, where the population enjoys the full enjoyment of their political, economic, social, and cultural rights and where civil society is in turmoil !…

He thus gave an unambiataking observation: the polisario cannot in any way claim to be representative as an armed militia that survives only through repression and impunity. The real representatives of the Sahrawi population, he said, are the local elected representatives of the Southern Provinces, who enjoy the democratic legitimacy !…

Calling on the oppressed people of the Tindouf camps, El Baihi said that only the Moroccan autonomy initiative would lift these populations out of their “pain” and “suffering”, calling on the United Nations to work quickly to end the dispute that has lasted too long !…

Insisting on the corruption of the polisario, the human rights activist noted that only the leaders of the Polisario and their Algerian sponsors benefit from the persistence of the regional dispute over the Moroccan Sahara.

Mr. El Baihi was speaking as part of the Sahara Debate, a citizen’s program that aims to provide an open and democratic platform to shed serene and dispassionate light on the issue of the Moroccan Sahara, far from the media-political propaganda orchestrated by Algeria and its polisario affiliates !…
