At a rather electoral press conference where he discussed, from cock-to-the-go, the health crisis caused by the coronavirus, the containment of the country, the rapid economic recovery and the riots that have occurred since last week across the United States in response to the death of African-American George Floyd in Minneapolis, the president touted the record of his administration and in particular the strength of the American economy.
While experts had expected losses of nearly 9 million U.S. jobs in May, 2.5 million jobs were created.
What we are talking about today is a tremendous tribute to equality. We’re getting our jobs back. Before the Chinese plague, we had the best figures in history for African Americans, Hispanics, and Asian Americans, and for everyone. We were doing so well, and we’re going back to that situation. I think we will probably have an even better year economically next year.
Saying he wanted all U.S. states to completely deconcine, Donald Trump specifically targeted the states of New York and New Jersey, which he said should call on the National Guard to prevent anti-racism protests caused by The death of George Floyd from escalating.
“We did it in Minnesota, in Minneapolis. They [les manifestants] destroyed this place. We’ve had so much success there. I called the governor and the National Guard went. One night, it was over. You don’t see any problems in Minnesota anymore, not at all. Not even a little. We want it to end,” he said.
A little later in his speech, the President pointed out that
all Americans must receive fair treatment from law enforcement, regardless of race, colour or gender.
But we can’t let what happened last week happen, he continued.
He immediately then mentioned George Floyd.
I hope George looks at us from up there thinking that what’s happening in this country is a great thing. It’s a great day for him, it’s a great day for everyone from an equality point of view. That is what our Constitution requires and what our country is.
Then he went on to say that he wanted to end his speech by saying that his administration had saved the American economy by passing several critical laws.
Asked by reporters about the plight of minorities, Mr. Trump then replied that
what happens to our country is the best thing that could happen to race relations.
We had the best economy in the world, and now we’re going to have an even better onehe repeated.
He dismissed a journalist’s comment that the unemployment rate had increased among minorities.
This is just the beginning, the best is yet to comehe replied.
“All the right decisions”
Also on Friday, Donald Trump said the United States had “largely overcome” the COVID-19 pandemic, which continues to kill around a thousand people in the country every day.
We made all the decisions we needed, he said, while his handling of the crisis was often criticised.
Mr. Trump said he had saved millions of lives, and that now was the time to revive the economy.
