Before this final, Montpellier had to eliminate in the round of 16 FC Nantes (2-0) from Deschamps, Dessailly, Kombouaré, Le Guen, before leaving Avignon (0-1) then AS Saint-Étienne (0-1 ).
At Princes Park, this June 2, 1990, the Montpellier residents find the Racing paris by David Ginola in front of 44,000 spectators. The MHSC displays a team made up of old fellows (Rust, Xuereb, Ayache) and young kneaders of talent trained at the club (Laurent Blanc, Pascal Baills, Kader Ferhaoui,…), but must do without their Colombian star Carlos Valderrama, excluded during the semi-final, after a dangerous tackle. After a close match, it’s Laurent Blanc who finds the nets first, on a free kick, in extra time (103rd minute).
A few minutes later, on a counterattack led by Vincent Guérin and Éric Cantona, Kader Ferhaoui crucifies Pascal Olmeta in his cages. David Ginola, who reduced the score to the 109th minute, could do nothing about it, the MHSC won his second French cup (the first date in 1929 during the “derby” final against FC Sète)… 22 years before another epic, that of Giroud, Yanga-Mbiwa, Belhanda, Cabella, which will bring them to the title of champions of France.
