Mexico intends to extradite to prosecute Felipe Calderon’s former Secretary of Security, Genaro Garcia Luna, who has been detained in the United States since 2019, reported President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador.

“We care about the extradition (of Garcia Luna), because here they also did business and there is money involved,” the president explained in his morning conference on Friday.

Lopez Obrador also said that his government seeks to prosecute the former official during the PAN administration of Vicente Fox Quesada and Felipe Calderon Hinojosa to do justice, but “also to recover assets of the people of Mexico, assets of illegal origin.”

“We are interested, first, that the truth be known (…) how it got to the point that public security was in the hands of Garcia Luna, who had an agreement with one of the organized crime gangs,” he explained.

On Thursday a New York court charged the former head of the Anti-Drug Division of the Federal Police (PF), Ramon Eduardo Pequeno Garcia, and the former head of the Federal Investigations Agency (AFI), Luis Cardenas Palomino.

Both men close to the former official are accused of protecting the operations of the Sinaloa Cartel from their federal charges. Pequeno Garcia and Cardenas Palomino are charged with a cocaine trafficking conspiracy, according to the US Department of Justice.

“In exchange for multibillion-dollar bribes, the accused allegedly allowed the Sinaloa Cartel to operate with impunity in Mexico (…) Cardenas Palomino and Pequeno Garcia are currently fugitives,” said the US authority. it’s a statement.

The Department of Justice also explained that for almost two decades Garcia Luna accepted bribes from the Sinaloa Cartel to facilitate its operations. Garcia Luna faces a trial in the United States since December 2019 for these accusations.

In the event of being found guilty, Cardenas Palomino and Pequeno Garcia would face sentences of between 10 years and life in prison for their crimes.

The head of the Financial Intelligence Unit (FIU), Santiago Nieto, reported that the accounts of Garcia Luna, Cardenas Palomino and Pequeno Garcia have been blocked for several months.
