Pork prices plummet with coronavirus crisis

Prices, down by a third, are weighed down by a wave of contamination in several large slaughterhouses in Europe, especially in Germany and the Netherlands, and by the refusal of China, a large consumer of pork, to import meat from abattoirs confronted with coronavirus.

While the kilogram of carcass pork was still 1.779 euros ago, it fell to 1.227 euros on Thursday. “These are the lowest prices since the outbreak of swine fever in our country in early 2019,” said the Flemish agricultural union at Boerenbond.

These prices do not suit Belgian breeders, who hope for a thinning on the market in the coming weeks.
