It is naturally in a hushed atmosphere, at the Alfredo Di Stefano stadium behind closed doors because of the Covid-19 pandemic, that Real Madrid was crowned champion of Spain, thanks to its success on Villarreal (2-1), for the account of the 37th and penultimate day.
The particular context of this 34th title did not prevent the Merengues from exulting at the final whistle, at the heart of their training center, happy to have ended up taking the best on FC Barcelona. Second two points for the Catalans, the end of the 27th act and the stopping of the competition, they have achieved a flawless since the resumption, with ten wins in a row. Unstoppable.
Benzema still goalscorer
Faced with the Yellow Submarine, having great difficulty in reaching the opposing surface, the players of Zinedine Zidane, who had established the left of his attack Eden Hazard, back from injury (ankle), and the right the young Brazilian Rodrygo ( rather than Vinicius), were once again able to count on Karim Benzema.
The French striker first embodied an insolent, but not so hard-hitting domination, scoring his 20th goal in La Liga, taking advantage of Luka Modric’s gap in the area to adjust Sergio Asenjo, between the legs (29th).
Very free to move, the Croatian international had previously tried from afar (16th). But it was Benzema who was most dangerous before the break, with a crushed recovery (7th) and a volley from the left, too crossed (15th).
Ramos’ curious penalty
The second period, without great passion or rhythm, could never revive the suspense at the top of this Liga. The best defense (23 goals conceded), notably made up of the French Ferland Mendy (left) and Raphael Varane (in the center line), left very little space for the teammates of ex-Marseillais, Zambo Anguissa .
And, on an energetic interception in the middle of the field, Sergio Ramos went to obtain a penalty which the captain drew for … Benzema. The former Lyonnais scored, saw his goal refused to enter the area quickly, but he caught himself on his own, with a cross shot (77th), for his 4th double this season.
A strike on the bar of Toni Kroos later (81st), it was Villarreal who reduced the score, thanks to the powerful header from Vicente Iborra, who lobbed Thibaut Courtois (83rd). Then the Belgian goalkeeper had to make two big saves in additional time (90th + 3). A reaction far too late to thwart a coronation, especially since, at the same time, Barca was beaten by Osasuna, at Camp Nou (1-2).
After two unfinished seasons at the national level (3rd in 2018 and 2019), Real is once again the King of Spain, the last time already under the orders of Zidane (2017), champion as player, too, with the Merengue (2003 ). A conclusion so beautiful that it would have deserved the Fountain of Cybele, traditional place of jubilation in Madrid, on evenings of great victories.
But health precautions do not allow it. It would be surprising, however, that the party did not take over the Spanish capital on this hot summer night. Until the Goddess is perhaps venerated, as it should be, in a few weeks, in the Champions League …
