Belinda Bencic is not participating in this year’s US Open. The Eastern Swiss announced that she would not use Twitter.
“I made the difficult decision to skip the US Open and return to the tour in a month in Rome,” wrote the semi-finalist from 2019. The tournament is to take place from August 31 to September 13 under severe restrictions due to the corona virus.

Bencic joins a well-known absence list. Before reaching eighth place in the world rankings, two other semi-finalists from last year, Canadian defending champion Bianca Andreescu and Ukrainian Jelina Switolina, decided to skip the US Open. The Australian world number one Ashleigh Barty, the Dutchwoman Kiki Bertens (WTA 7) and the Russian Swetlana Kuznetsova, who won the tournament in 2004, will not participate in New York due to the risks and restrictions.
