Is controlling the playback speed of a movie or series a bad idea?
This new feature that the video streaming giant brings to its platform today has long been controversial. It was indeed revealed in a test in 2019, but many directors and actors opposed it. Director Judd Apatow had for example tweeted last October that ” distributors should not be able to change the way content is presented “. Netflix has assured, however, that the quality of the content will not be diminished by the player speed the user chooses.
In addition, an official told our colleagues of The Verge than : ” we have been aware of the concerns of some creators. That’s why we’ve put a cap on reading speeds and asking users to change the reading speed every time they watch new content. ».
Very convenient for people with disabilities
Regardless, the feature is now officially arriving on the platform. According to Netflix, it will be mainly used by subscribers of the platform to watch their favorite scene again or even have time to read subtitles for people with disabilities. Indeed, deaf people can benefit from slow reading speed so that they can read anything written on the screen. On the contrary, blind people, for example, need faster reading speeds since they often have higher than normal hearing abilities.
This feature could also be very useful for les amateurs de binge-watching. Viewing the Netflix catalog all at once effectively requires a very long 4-year binge-watching session. Netflix will be testing this playback speed control feature soon on iOS and web browser while analyzing the feedback from the deployment on Android.
