Eviction of vendors in the center of Santa Marta – Other Cities – Colombia

Tourists and citizens in general who were on Friday night in the Historic Center of Santa Marta witnessed an embarrassing confrontation between members of the Secretariat of Government, Police and informal vendors, which was unleashed as a result of an operation to control public space that he led the Mayor’s Office.

The discussion was generated after the district government secretary, Adolfo Bula, asked some musicians to vacate the food court for not having permits.

The refusal of the artist who argued that this was his only source of work, It gave rise to an exchange of words which was joined by other street vendors and two spokesmen for this union.

Tension increased when the District official ratified his order to remove anyone who did not have permission. At that time one of the leaders of the informal, identified as Lino Pereira, He demanded that he respect the right to work and rebuked him, pointing out that he had committed an alleged abuse of power.

Adolfo Bula, was also excited and with an angry tone asked him to respect him, while he left the place. From then on everything was confusion. Members of the Police were present to guard the Secretary of Government and his work team.

In a video that Jennifer del Toro recorded, another of the representatives of the informal sector, it is seen how Pereira, when trying to prevent the departure of the Secretary of Government, is touched by an informed person who was guarding, and in the midst of his anger he pushes him.

One of those present who surrounded Bula and to calm the spirits, draws a weapon apparently blank and makes at least two shots into the air that caused panic among those who were at that time in the Los Novios park.

About the shots

The representatives of the vendors’ union rejected the reaction of the person who shot, who they consider put at risk the lives of the people who were crowded there.

Del Toro assured that the person carrying the weapon was a common citizen of the Mayor’s Office team and not of the Police, therefore, he requested an investigation and legal action be taken against him.

“He is a contractor for the Ministry of Government and had a dangerous behavior. These acts that attack good people cannot be allowed in any way ”, Jennifer del Toro said.

For its part, the Mayor’s Office spoke in a press release clarifying “that the Secretary of the Government does not have a personal protection body. It is also necessary to indicate that one of the protesters attacked a member of the National Police when they were trying to protect the District official ”.

He also rejected any act of violence that put the health and life of the Samaritan community at risk, as well as security and order.

Finally, he stated that the Government Secretariat, led by Adolfo Bula Ramírez, in the company of district authorities, were carrying out a control operation in Santander Park, or also known as Novios Park, when they were rebuked by a group of people who altered public order, for which the intervention and protection of the National Police was necessary.

The commander of the Metropolitan Police, Oscar Solarte, confirmed that the shots were not fired by members of the institution and detailed that the weapon used was blank, for that reason there were no arrests for this fact.

“As an authority, we proceeded to seize the blank pistol and refer the case to the Prosecutor’s Office, which will determine if there was any special situation. On our part, no arrests were brought forward because fortunately there was no physical damage to those involved, ”said the senior official.
