VIEW: The upcoming doctors album is called “Hell”. Did you have an enlightenment?
Farin Urlaub: Well, it depends on how you pronounce “Hell”.
Of course, you can read it in English, and we’ll be in hell. What now: light or darkness?
If you associate “bright” with enlightenment, then we’ve done everything right. But the ambiguity was entirely intentional.
“I’m going on vacation, that’s what I like to do.” That’s how Jan Vetter (56) speaks in 1982 – and he already has an artist name within the then newly founded Berlin band Die Ärzte: Farin Urlaub. Grown up in West Berlin and shaped by his mother’s Beatles albums, he took guitar lessons at the age of nine. At 16, before he graduated from high school, he cuts and bleaches his hair and becomes punk. Urlaub (guitar) is one of the founding members of the Doctors with Bela B (57, drums), who split up as a band in 1988 and have been back as a trio since 1993 with Rodrigo González (52, bass, piano). Besides Die Toten Hosen, Die Ärzte are the most successful German rock punk band. Her greatest hits include songs such as “Scream for Love”, “Boy” and “Men are Pigs”. “Hell” is the doctors’ 14th studio album and will be available in stores on October 23.
Ambiguity also suits you: you always have a big smile on your face, but on the album cover of “Hell” it looks demonic …
… which brings us closer to hell again. Both sides are in us. We want to be on the good side, of course, but we sometimes go bad ways to get there. That’s a good thing, otherwise we would never have started with punk rock.
In March during the lockdown you announced the upcoming album with the “Lied für Jetzt” (song for now) and sang that you had screwed a few songs together out of boredom. Do we have “Hell” only to thank Corona?
In fact, we were in the studio earlier, in October and November last year. Atypical for Die Ärzte, we decided to take a three-month break to record the album as relaxed as possible. Because of Covid-19 it was then four months. During this month of uncertainty a few more songs were made.
“That little quarantine is not the worst thing in the world,” you sing in the “Song for Now”. Do you still see it that way?
In Germany we are currently seeing that many people openly flaunt the egoism they have always celebrated: “I don’t want to wear a mask because it’s uncomfortable for me.” So they put their own comfort above the lives of others. You can’t be more arrogant, selfish or stupid.
Is Society Sick? Do we need more doctors?
Ha ha, the joke had to come. No, society is already healthy. If you look at surveys, 80 to 90 percent are stunned by the demonstrations against the Corona measures.
And at concerts you would have given the corona deniers an antidote. Do you miss the stage performances?
Yes, although I find the stage the wrong place to do politics. There you stand at the microphone and gossip: “I’m the rock star and tell you where to go.” I always hated that. I have no sense of mission.
But your lyrics always express a decided attitude.
Of course, sure.
And your fans adopt the attitude, otherwise they wouldn’t be your fans.
Yes, but that’s why we always formulate contradicting things so that they can’t just impose a worldview on themselves. Rather, I want to encourage people to be intelligent and not just parrot something. You have to think for yourself.
You do not address Corona on the album “Hell”. You prefer to sing about childhood photos, guitarists and sex with Alexa. Why?
We deliberately held back from addressing Corona on the album. There is also the hope that it will be over at some point. We didn’t want to give the topic any more importance than it has already taken in our lives. The stupid virus!
“Also”, the doctors’ last studio album, was released in 2012. Why such a long pause?
We had done too many tours too quickly and then what we had been able to avoid all these years happened: we got into each other’s hair. As a consequence, we took an indefinitely long break.
So is there something in last year’s rumor that The Doctors could definitely break up?
It was already up for debate, to be honest. I wasn’t so sure if I would ever want to make music again. I don’t feel like repeating myself.
And why do you continue now anyway?
The good Bela has brought us out of oblivion. He said: “Come on, there’s something else in the band.” And today I have to say he was right. The band is now back to what it should be: made of one piece.
You can hear your playing mood in all 18 songs.
It’s nice to see that. We are freshly in love again, so to speak.
And the lyrics are bursting with blooming imagination again. The highlight “Once a beer” with the line “I ended up as a beer in the glass” – a terrible idea for you as an avowed anti-alcoholic!
I do not drink alcohol. But that’s not something that I carry in front of me. It’s just a fact.
“There is no beer in Hawaii” is no obstacle for you to travel there. Have you been there already?
Yes, but I was disappointed for other reasons. Unfortunately, I haven’t been to the smaller islands and only to the Big Island – and that’s like McDonald’s by the sea.
Farin Urlaub, your name says it all: you have set yourself the goal of traveling to every country in the world. How many are there now?
There are very, very many. But now I refuse to put a figure on it because it can arouse feelings of envy and people might say: “He just wants to excel with it.”
How many are still missing?
I’m still missing over 50 countries.
Did you add another one in the Corona year?
It would also have been difficult to get to the destination.
It wouldn’t have been completely impossible, but I didn’t want to override other people. I stayed home just like everyone else.
In the Corona year, the company questioned air travel. Have you also considered your own travel behavior?
I’ve become even stricter. Corona was a welcome trigger: No more nonsense flights within Europe! I do it by train or – if there is no other way – by car.
Shortly before Christmas, Die Ärzte was supposed to travel to the sold-out Hallenstadion in Zurich for two performances, now that has been postponed for a year. What present are you going to put under the tree for us Swiss this year instead?
The only Christmas present is our album – there is nothing more for now. But that’s almost even rarer than one of our appearances in Switzerland.
The doctors, «Hell» (Universal). The album will go on sale on October 23rd.
