Solidarity returned to meet this Saturday in cyberspace for another attack, from all corners of the planet, against the economic, commercial and financial blockade imposed on Cuba by the United States government for more than half a century.

Since it was agreed in April 2015, at the Peoples’ Summit in Panama, on the 17th of each month actions against this insane and genocidal policy take place in the world, and this time social networks were the main scene of a combat that, due to the proximity of October 20, the Day of Cuban Culture, focused on the effects of the blockade on that sector of national life.

Friends and artists from many countries participated in this online forum, followed from the virtual broadcasting room of the Cuban Institute of Friendship with the Peoples by Ángel Arzoaga, deputy chief and coordinator of the Department of International Relations of the Communist Party of Cuba, and Fernando González, president of ICAP.

He referred to the difficulties caused to the circulation of art and literature by the brutal imperial siege. Fernando León Jacomino, Vice Minister of Culture, and stressed that this is probably the most visible area, but that the implications and damages of the blockade in the cultural sector are much more complex.

Regarding the obstacles it imposes, for example, to the exchange between American and Cuban artists, it meant that during the government of Donald Trump the situation has only worsened and today it is practically impossible for a group from the Island to tour and perform regularly. in that neighboring country.

The Vice Minister of Culture lashed out at the hostility against Cuban artists, simply for having decided to live in their homeland, which is extremely unfair, as well as discriminatory.

He condemned as infamous the attacks of a very powerful media machine that turns these offenses against artists into truths and demonizes and criminalizes them, especially on social networks.

In this virtual meeting Solidarity vs. Bloqueo Indira Fajardo, president of the Cuban Institute of Music, referred to the action in the cultural sector in these times of coronavirus, when in the face of the restrictions imposed by COVID-19 the State and institutions have given special attention to artists and their salary protection more than 50 million pesos have been allocated.

Yuri Gala, Director of Bilateral Issues of the United States General Directorate of the Cuban Ministry of Foreign Affairs, emphasized the tightening of the blockade under the current administration and its growing impact on the ties between the two peoples, particularly cultural ones, and reiterated that the Greater Antillean will never yield to pressure and is prepared to continue facing hostility from the United States.

Another of the forum members, the Cuban Israel Rojas, a member of the Buena Fe duo, called on the artists to join a fight that is not only for Cuba, but for all of Humanity, and to unite in defense of the best possible art.

We know that the hegemonic cultural industry does not invoke the best values of the human being and that, if you are not there, the most likely thing is that they almost do not exist, denounced Rojas, and endorsed the words of the Spanish journalist Pascual Serrano, for whom in these times It is not necessary to assassinate Víctor Jara, it is enough that the industry silences you so that you are dead.

The forum had followers on five continents, and artists from countries as far apart as Argentina, Senegal and Australia spoke and even sang to express their love for the Cuban people and unrestricted support for their Revolution.

In addition to thanking so many expressions of affection and solidarity, Noemí Rabaza, first vice president of ICAP, insisted on the impact of the blockade on a sector that has always been among the priorities of the Revolutionary Government, and brought to the forum two essential ideas of Commander in Chief Fidel Castro: “the first thing to save is culture” and “without culture there is no possible freedom.”
