Donald Trump (74) or Joe Biden (77)? America will be billed in a little over two weeks. The presidential election in the USA is moving around the world – including in Switzerland. The leading polling institute Gallup interviewed 1000 Swiss people from all over the country about Trump’s presidency from October 8-15, exclusively for BLICK. The results of the representative survey show that after four years Mr and Mrs Swiss have passed a damning verdict on the US President.
Three out of four respondents have a bad image of Trump, 59 percent of them even have a “very negative” opinion. For comparison: In the sympathy ranking of the most powerful heads of state, only Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan (66) comes off worse. Trump is therefore less popular in Switzerland than the Russian autocrat Vladimir Putin (68), the Iranian President Hassan Rohani (71) or the Chinese head of state Xi Jinping (67).
The reputation of the USA is also suffering
But Trump is not only unpopular, he has also damaged the reputation of his country in the eyes of the Swiss: 76 percent of those surveyed see a worldwide damage to the image of the USA because of him. “That shows a great cultural conflict between the Swiss perception and that of the Americans,” says Christoph Glauser from the Bern Institute for Applied Argumentation Research (IFAA). In the US, Trump has an estimated 35 percent loyal following. In addition, there are conservatives and moderates, who hold up to him because of his politics.
The political scientist explains the discrepancy in opinion between the Swiss and Americans with the information content: “In this country we read more critical reports about Trump, but in America it is completely different. Many people there have no alternative information besides the conservative broadcaster Fox News and social media. ”
Social and environmental particularly negative
The Gallup survey also shows how great the image damage for the USA is already in Switzerland. America only scores points in this country for innovation and economic performance. Social, environmental protection and immigration policy are perceived very negatively. “You lose trust quickly – building it again is much more difficult,” said political scientist Glauser.
The result of the question of whether one associates the USA with “truth and decency” is remarkable: only 15 percent of those questioned answered in the affirmative. According to Glauser, it has to do with the culture of political debate in Switzerland. “We always have to find compromises here, also treat minorities or those who think differently with respect and diplomacy,” he explains. Trump’s hit-and-run policy is therefore uncomfortable and often embarrassing for the Swiss.
Swiss would choose Biden
Not surprisingly, they have a clear favorite in this country: Joe Biden. 63 percent of respondents would vote for the Democrat, 13 percent Trump, and 24 percent gave no information. In the USA, too, Biden currently has good poll numbers, but the Swiss do not yet trust the thing: Only 44 percent of those surveyed really believe in a changing of the guard in the White House.
The US presidential elections will take place on November 3, 2020. The incumbent President Donald Trump is aiming for a second term. Can he defend his position or will challenger Joe Biden win for the Democrats?
