The youtuber #Memo #Aponte was harshly criticized and accused of racism for promoting “blakface” openly and still championing it.

#Memo #Aponte is one of the young #Mexican dubbing actors who has stood out for his participation in emblematic films, especially #Disney or #Pixar, since he has given voice in #Spanish to #Nemo in “#Finding #Nemo”, #Phineas #Flynn in “#Phineas and #Ferb”, #Hiro #Hamada in “#Great heroes “#And #Andy in” #Toy #Story 3 “, among many others.

#Parallel to his career in dubbing, #Memo #Aponte has a #YouTube channel where he creates content related to his work and personal life, it was for one of these videos that he was accused of racism.

#Memo #Aponte posted a video on his #YouTube channel where he and his collaborators appear in disguise of the characters from the #Pixar movie “#Soul” to walk down the street showing off the costumes, however, it was striking that one of his friends used the so-called “blakeface” to characterize himself as the main character.

“#Soul” is the first #Pixar film to feature an #African-American protagonist, a professor named #Joe #Gardner, for which #Memo #Aponte thought it correct that one of his collaborators painted his face black, sharpening his features, which generated criticism and accusations of racism.

#Memo #Aponte was accused of openly promoting “blackface”, what generated the anger of the voice actor and he clarified that it was not he who painted himself in black but rather his friend #Jonary “and that this showed racism against him.”

“Clarification: if my friend #Jonary’s skin color bothers you, so they’re being racist with him“#Memo commented in one of the video comments.

#What is “blackface” and why is it racist?

The “blackface” is the term to refer to when someone paints their face black to look like an #Afro-descendant and it is a noted practice of perpetuating negative stereotypes as it was born for white people to make fun of black people, because it allows to style the exaggeration of lips, hair and phenotypic characteristics that are associated with people of #African descent to satirize them.

#After criticism for racism, #Memo #Aponte withdrew the video and offered an apology: “It was wrong and my intention was never to offend anyone, much less make fun of myself. #We learned something new and it is wise to correct mistakes. #From me and my team sincere apologies. #It will not happen again”.
