Will Josh Allen, Bills starters play against Miami? Sean McDermott has plan

#In previous years, the #Buffalo #Bills would almost certainly be going all out to claim the #No. 2 seed in the AFC in #Week 17.

#Claiming the #No. 2 seed used to ensure a first round bye for teams. #This year, however, only the #No. 1 seed in the AFC and NFC will have time off come #Wild #Card #Weekend thanks to the NFL adding an extra playoff team in each conference.

#Of course, the #No. 2 seed does come with some benefits. #It guarantees two home playoff games as long as the team can get through #Wild #Card #Weekend and keeps you out of the #Kansas #City #Chiefs’ path until the AFC #Championship #Game. #If the #Chiefs were to get knocked off in the divisional round, being the #No. 2 seed also puts you in the driver’s seat to host the AFC #Championship #Game.

#Heading into #Week 17, #Buffalo is the AFC’s #No. 2 seed thanks to their head-to-head win over the #Pittsburgh #Steelers. The team can drop to #No. 3, however, with a #Week 17 loss to the #Miami #Dolphins and a #Steelers win over the #Cleveland #Browns. A #Pittsburgh win could happen, but #Steelers head coach #Mike #Tomlin has already announced that starting quarterback #Ben #Roethlisberger will rest in the regular season finale and that #Mason #Rudolph will start. #Cleveland, meanwhile, will be playing for their playoff lives one week after losing to the #New #York #Jets.

#Pittsburgh’s decision to start #Rudolph does not ensure a #Steelers loss in #Week 17–Buffalo knows firsthand about losing to #Steelers backups in 2004–but it makes it likelier that #Buffalo will be the AFC’s #No. 2 seed regardless of the outcome of their game.

#Will #Sean #McDermott follow #Mike #Tomlin’s lead and rest #Josh #Allen and other key starters, give the unit some playing time before #Wild #Card #Weekend or play them all four quarters? #Buffalo’s head coach said the team has a plan in place.

“Those conversations have taken place and we have a plan,” #Sean #McDermott told reporters shortly after their 38-9 win over the #New #England #Patriots. “I want to keep that plan internal, for a number of reasons. #Number one, I haven’t had a chance to talk to your players yet. #At the end of the day, it’s trying to do what’s best for our football team and every team’s different.”

#Buffalo lost #Cole #Beasley to a leg injury late in #Week 16. #McDermott said the talented slot receiver was “week-to-week” in terms of how long he will be out of action. #After seeing a key contributor go down last week it’s very possible that #Buffalo does not risk losing any other key starters against #Miami. #According to #McDermott, #Buffalo’s plan will come down to what is right for the team.

“It comes back to making sure we’re doing right by our team and the best thing for us,” #McDermott said. “We’re always trying to weigh every factor we can, every variable, put that into the equation to try and help us make a decision here.”

#Considering how things seldom leak out of #One #Bills #Drive, we may not have our answer on #Allen and other key starters playing until #Sunday morning during warmups.
