McConnell rejects bill to increase stimulus checks

(CNN) — #Senate #Majority #Leader #Mitch #McConnell rejected a bill to increase direct payments to $ 2,000 in the stimulus package, likely closing the door to any avenue of approval before the end of #Congress this end of week.

#McConnell addressed the #Senate to attack the #House-approved bill, specifically on the issue of higher-income individuals and couples who would be eligible to receive some of the payments due to how the income eliminations are structured.

The #Kentucky #Republican said the #House bill “does not have a realistic path to quickly pass the #Senate” and said the #Democratic-led effort deviated from what #President #Donald #Trump, who has repeatedly lobbied for to #Republicans to pass the expanded stimulus checks, he actually asked.

“The #Senate will not be intimidated into giving more loaned money to rich friends of #Democrats who don’t need help,” #McConnell said.

#Senate #Democratic leader #Chuck #Schumer, who has pushed for an immediate vote on the measure, criticized #McConnell’s position and pressured #Republicans to put the bill to a vote.

“#At the very least, the #Senate deserves the opportunity to vote up or down,” #Schumer said, adding that “there is no other decision than the #House bill.”

#Trump’s priorities, according to #McConnell

#But #McConnell also made clear that nothing would advance in that chamber that does not include #Trump’s other two priorities: a total repeal of online liability protections and an investigation into suspected voter fraud.

“The #Senate is not going to divide the three issues that #President #Trump linked,” #McConnell said to the full #Senate.

#McConnell, on #Tuesday, introduced legislation combining #Trump’s three priorities, each of which is a prerequisite for #Trump’s signing of the covid-19 aid and spending package earlier this week. #Trump himself has never specified that those three elements should be linked.

#But #McConnell, in his remarks on #Wednesday, made clear that the introduction of his legislation met the contours of the deal with #Trump, which stipulated only to begin the process to vote on the issues.

#As it currently stands, there are no scheduled votes on #McConnell’s bill, or the legislation passed by the #House, and GOP aides say the 116th #Congress is likely to come to an end without any action to increase payments. direct.

The #Kentucky #Republican opened his remarks in plenary on #Wednesday criticizing independent #Vermont #Senator #Bernie #Sanders for delaying the override vote on #Trump’s veto of the #National #Defense #Authorization #Act (NDAA).

“#Today the #Senate was supposed to finish legislation that ensures critical tools, training and support for the US military,” he said. “#But the junior senator from #Vermont had other ideas.”

#McConnell added, “The #Senate will stay on this important bill until we complete it, one way or another.”

#Sanders has said he will delay the NDAA override vote unless #McConnell brings a check for $ 2,000 to a floor vote. A final vote could be extended through #Saturday if #Sanders continues to hold out. #Eventually, it will pass. #It’s just a matter of how long it will take.
