Coronavirus: Germany breaks its records and adds 1,129 dead | Coronavirus | DW

The #Robert #Koch #Institute (RKI), the entity in charge of monitoring the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic in #Germany, reported this #Wednesday (12.30.2020) a total of 1,129 people killed by or with COVID-19, exceeding for the first time the barrier of a thousand cases per day. The government warned that the country is “very far” from regaining normalcy and it seems clear that new restrictions will be applied to public life.

The RKI also reported 24,740 new infections, bringing the total number of verified infections to 1,687,185. The authorities consider that 1,302,600 patients have recovered, while the fatalities amount to 32,107. #Meanwhile, the average weekly incidence per 100,000 inhabitants stands at 141.3 cases, slightly below the maximum recorded on #December 22, which was 197.6 cases.

RKI #President #Lothar #Wieler warned that no immediate effects can be expected as a result of the vaccination campaign that began on #Sunday, and that to see concrete results will still have to wait several months. #For his part, the #Minister of #Health, #Jens #Spahn, said that the restrictions on daily life will be extended beyond #January 10, although at another level.

#Quiet new year

The situation is particularly critical in #Saxony, a federal state of the ex-RDA that for a long time resisted restrictions and whose incidence rate reached 330 cases per 100,000 inhabitants on #Wednesday in the last seven days. #Bavaria, #Berlin or #Brandenburg, the region surrounding the capital, are also unable to control the pandemic.

“These numbers show the extent to which the virus continues to hit us brutally,” #Spahn said. “#In this situation, I don’t see how you can go back” to the period before the restrictions, he warned. “#This will probably be the quietest #New #Year’s dinner in #Germany,” admitted the minister, who described a “time of contrasts, between hope and great suffering.”

#Chancellor #Angela #Merkel will meet on #January 5 with the presiding ministers of the federal states, to decide on a possible extension of the restrictions.
