49ers ‘sick’ about losing D.J. Reed, a reason for Seahawks’ defensive resurgence

The 49ers will end their forgettable season #Sunday by being reminded of an unfortunate decision they made before it began.

They will face #Seahawks cornerback D.J. #Reed, their 2018 fifth-round pick whom they waived in #August with an injury designation when he was sidelined with a torn pectoral.

“D.J., it made us sick to lose,” head coach #Kyle #Shanahan said. “… #It’s something I wish we could have had back.”

The 49ers’ error gifted their NFC #West rivals with a versatile player who has started at nickel corner, outside corner and returned punts and kickoffs. #Reed has 57 tackles, two interceptions, six pass breakups and two fumble recoveries in nine games (seven starts), while averaging 27.4 yards on five kickoff returns and 8.0 yards on eight punt returns.

#Reed quickly made the 49ers pay for letting him get away: #He made his season debut on #Nov. 1 by intercepting a #Jimmy #Garoppolo pass to end the 49ers’ second drive in the #Seahawks’ 37-27 win.

“He immediately showed his stuff,” #Seahawks head coach #Pete #Carroll said. “… #As soon as we got him on our field, we just loved the guy.”

The loss of #Reed is particularly galling since the 49ers’ top five cornerbacks aren’t under contract for 2021. #Reed is signed through 2021, meaning he could haunt the 49ers twice more next season after playing a key role in a defensive resurgence that’s helped the #Seahawks (11-4) claim the NFC #West title.

#After six games, #Seattle was allowing an NFL-worst 479.2 yards per game and was on pace to surrender 7,667 yards, which would have shattered the NFL record held by the 2012 #Saints (7,042).

#Over the last nine games, their opponents have averaged 320.7 yards.

#What’s behind their about-face? #Asked that question, #Shanahan mentioned the #Seahawks got safety #Jamal #Adams back after he missed four early season games with a groin injury, traded for pass rusher #Carlos #Dunlap and also, he noted, “getting D.J. #Reed out there.”

#For perspective, #Adams and #Dunlap are #Pro #Bowl players and #Reed had 54 tackles, two pass breakups and no interceptions in 31 games (two starts) in his first two seasons with the 49ers.

The 49ers valued #Reed, who can also play free safety, but they weren’t sure when he would be able to return from the torn pectoral he suffered in #June. #In #August, after waiving #Reed, general manager #John #Lynch said the earliest #Reed could return from his injury was early #November, which was accurate but not assured at that time.

“Ultimately, (it was) too difficult to keep a roster spot for something that may go into #December,” #Lynch said.

#On #Wednesday, #Shanahan said the 49ers couldn’t have placed #Reed on the physically unable to perform list because they had an “unprecedented number” of players on the injury list and roster rules wouldn’t have allowed the 49ers to add #Reed.

#Still, given #Reed’s undetermined return, the 49ers were counting on #Reed to go unclaimed on waivers, which would have allowed them to place him on injured reserve.

#Instead, the #Seahawks pounced. #Carroll said he wasn’t very familiar with #Reed, but general manager #John #Schneider had done his homework on him before the 2018 draft.

“John thought we really had something special in the kid,” #Carroll said. “And recognized there was an opportunity to claim him, and so we went for him.”

The 49ers took #Reed with the #No. 142 pick in 2018, four picks before #Schneider selected cornerback #Tre #Flowers.

#Flowers is expected to return #Sunday after missing four games with a hamstring injury, but #Reed took his starting outside cornerback spot while he was sidelined.

#That means the 49ers will be constantly reminded #Sunday of one that got away.
