CDC warned that more covid-19 strains are expected to emerge but “unlikely” to affect the effectiveness of vaccines

#At a press briefing on #Wednesday, authorities from the #United #States #Centers for #Disease #Control and #Prevention (CDC) agreed that it is likely that at least one of the two or more new variants of the coronavirus has spread among the population in the #United #States but they also warned that they are unlikely to have much of an impact on vaccine efficacy or standard precautions.

The first case reported in the #United #States of the “#British strain” #Highly transmissible was confirmed #Tuesday in a #Colorado man with no travel history and this variant is estimated to have been circulating there since #September 2020.

#Studies indicate that another variant arose in #South #Africa independently and that it would now be spreading internationally, and that #Nigeria, the most populous country in #Africa, detected another strain in its territory. #But neither of these two has been discovered yet in the #United #States.

“#We hope to see new variants emerge over time”, #Henry #Walke, CDC’s director of covid-19 incidents, said during #Wednesday’s press conference, the portal reported. #MedPage #Today.

AND #Gregory #Armstrong, director of the CDC’s #Advanced #Molecular #Detection #Program, cautioned that it is very difficult to know exactly how many variants have emerged so far, because it depends on how you set the threshold for how different a virus must be to represent a variant.

The officials remarked that The US government has been working on a strain surveillance system since #November with two national laboratories to determine the penetration of the newly identified variants and the results of that investigation are expected in the coming days.

#On the other hand, it is not yet known with certainty how well vaccines and other treatments will work against these variants. “#However, from what we know from experience with this mutation and other mutations it is unlikely to have a major impact on vaccine-induced immunity or on the existing immunity of earlier strains “#Armstrong said.

“#Experts generally agree that mutations like this are unlikely to have much of an impact on neutralizing them,” #Armstrong said. #He added: “It may have a small impact, but keep in mind that the amount of immunity induced either by a natural infection or by a vaccine is likely to be large enough that a slightly lowered titer has no effect. remarkable”.

#Armstrong also noted that #In vitro studies of the #British variant are underway and those should provide a more definitive answer on its impact.

#Additionally, #Walke said there is no reason to think that recommended measures to reduce spread, such as washing hands, keeping your distance, wearing a mask, and avoiding large gatherings, will not work against these variants. “#We are pushing the same messages that we have been pushing all along,” he said. “#Although we believe that this variant that originated in the UK can potentially transmit more than the wild type, we strongly believe that the mitigation measures in our current guidance will work,” he concluded.

The #British strain of the coronavirus, which experts estimate is up to 70 percent more contagious than the “original” but did not prove it to be more lethal, #It has transcended the borders of the #United #Kingdom for weeks and has already been detected in different continents. #In fact, on #Tuesday #Chilean authorities announced that they had also confirmed a case within their territory.

#That variant known as B.1.1.7 led the UK to a new daily record for coronavirus cases on #Tuesday and #South #Africa to impose a series of new measures, amid worldwide fears that the year-end festivities will trigger new spikes in infections.
