In April there will be twice as many COVID-19 cases in El Salvador, according to epidemiologists | News from El Salvador

#That is the projection of the #University of #Liverpool, in #England, according to epidemiologist doctor #Alfonso #Rosales. #It would go from 278 to almost 600 new infections a day

#According to the projection of epidemiologist experts from the #University of #Liverpool, in #England, a dark outlook is expected for #El #Salvador for the first months of 2021.

#Alfonso #Rosales, doctor and consultant in epidemiology, cited that according to studies by this entity “a doubling of cases is projected in #El #Salvador, which we will be seeing in 135 days. #In four and a half months (#April), we will be doubling the number of current cases we have (276 on #December 29). The pressure that this is going to exert on the health system will be much greater than what we experienced in the previous peak ”that the country suffered, between the months of #June and #July.

#Rosales, who participated as a guest on #Channel 33 this #Wednesday morning together with the infectologist #Iván #Solano #Leiva, also explained that in #Central #America, #El #Salvador is at a 2% acceleration of new infections of #Sars-Cov-2 per week , while other countries in the area are slowing down: #Guatemala with -18%, #Honduras -21% and #Costa #Rica -7%. #Very serious what is happening in #Panama, which suffers an acceleration of 36%, according to #Rosales.

The specialist considered that this rise in cases in #El #Salvador “is related to the behavior of the population at this #Christmas season, the protection measures have been relaxed too much, there is too much crowding of people.”

#Solano #Leiva agreed that “in #El #Salvador we are facing a rebound in cases, after the highest number of cases we had in #July, the peak of that first COVID outbreak in our country. #For three or four weeks, we have seen that these averages according to official data have been rising, today over 250 daily cases ”.

#Although he insisted that the government’s figures are not entirely reliable, he stressed that even those numbers reflect an increase. #Solano #Leiva warned that “we are seeing in the public system that a percentage of ICU beds and hospitalizations due to COVID-19 is beginning to be noticed”, and regretted that everything points to “we are going to have a start of 2021 with a greater number of cases, with the risk that the health system will again collapse, as happened in the fateful months of #June and #July ”.

The country’s hospital capacity is already reaching its maximum capacity for the care of COVID-19 patients, explained #Solano #Leiva, and detailed that at the #El #Salvador #Hospital in #Cifco, “until a few days ago, they informed us that the capacity to use of the ICU beds were 92% occupied. #In 80% the NICU of intermediate, and 25 to 30% the beds of generals ”.

#Regarding the situation in other healthcare centers, #Solano #Leiva assured that “the #Surgical #Doctor (of the ISSS) has around 50 to 60 beds for COVID patients, and in recent weeks one of the two services for this is almost full. #And the ICU of the #General #Hospital is treating COVID patients, just like the #Amatepec of #Social #Security, and with each passing day its capacity is increasing ”with patients confirmed with the new #Coronavirus.

#Several private hospitals have not received COVID-19 patients for months, and according to #Solano #Leiva, in this sector “the only hospital that is receiving is the #Escalón #Medical #Center, which has a capacity for 15 beds, which until last night (#Tuesday ) were full, something we had not seen in recent weeks.

#Both doctors regretted that the management of the pandemic has been politicized in the country, instead of giving it a technical and scientific approach. #In this sense, #Solano #Leiva criticized that “it is a lie that the #Ministry of #Health does not have the necessary tools to take the relevant measures to help reduce the spread of COVID-19 in our country,” and remarked that the #Health #Code allows apply economic or civil sanctions.

#In the opinion of the also representative of the #Medical #Association of #El #Salvador, “the #Health #Code, in its #Article 131 establishes what to do when there are epidemics in the country, what measures can be taken. #Unfortunately, we have heard the #Minister (of #Health, #Francisco #Alabí) and many officials saying that their hands are tied, that they cannot establish some type of economic or civil sanctions, or denounce those people who carry out activities where there are massive events , where prevention measures are not kept ”.

#So that the projection of double the cases in #April does not occur, both doctors asked the population not to lower their guard with the necessary prevention measures, and asked the #Government for a better communication campaign on the risks of COVID-19 and the ways of avoid contagion.
