#Toronto (#Canada), #Dec 30 (EFE) .- #Canada will require all travelers who enter the country by plane to submit a negative coronavirus test carried out no more than 72 hours before the trip, a measure that comes before the rapid increase in cases and the appearance of infections of the new variant of the coronavirus.
The #Minister of #Intergovernmental #Affairs, #Dominic #LeBlanc, announced the decision on #Wednesday at a press conference and said that the measure was adopted today after an emergency meeting of the #Government.
#Travelers will have to submit a negative PCR test performed 72 hours before boarding the plane. #In addition, the #Canadian government said that the obligation is maintained that all travelers observe a 14-day quarantine after arriving in the country.
The measure will take effect soon, but when was not specified.
#Today, the two main provinces of the country, and those most affected by covid-19, #Quebec and #Ontario, registered record numbers of infection.
#Ontario said 2,923 new cases of the disease have been detected in the last 24 hours while #Quebec recorded 2,511 infections.
#Since last #December 26, #Ontario has decreed a strict lockdown to try to reduce the number of infections and prevent the collapse of hospitals.
#According to the latest figures, 323 people with covid-19 are in intensive care units (ICU) in the province. #Authorities have warned that when more than 300 people are in intensive care, medical care for other patients is impossible to maintain.
#Forecasts from #Ontario medical authorities indicate that if no action is taken, the number of ICU patients could reach 1,500 by mid-January, 75% of the province’s ICU beds.
#Given the seriousness of the situation, yesterday, the person in charge of the distribution of covid-19 vaccines in #Ontario, retired #General #Rick #Hillier, asked #Ottawa to consider immunizing with only one dose of #Pfizer and #Moderna vaccines instead. of the two recommended by pharmaceutical companies.
#But today, the #Minister of #Health of #Canada, #Patty #Hajdu, said that it was not possible to reduce the number of doses to achieve effective immunization of the population.
#Also today, the #Canadian #Ministry of #Health said that it is reviewing the data provided by the #AstraZeneca company on its vaccine against covid-19, a drug that has been approved today by the #United #Kingdom for use in the country.
The #Ministry explained in a statement that “there is still information and data that has to be provided by #AstraZeneca for review” and that it is working with authorities in other countries, including the UK “to share information and data on vaccines currently under review. “.
#Canada has already authorized the use of the #Pfizer and #Moderna vaccines and has begun vaccinating the most vulnerable population with these two sera.
