Auburn drops SEC opener at home against Arkansas

#Auburn shot better than 50 percent from beyond the arc and knocked down 15 3-pointers, but 19 turnovers — which led to 27 #Arkansas points — were ultimately too much to overcome.

The #Tigers dropped their SEC opener #Wednesday night to the #Razorbacks, 97-85, at #Auburn #Arena. #Devan #Cambridge and #Jamal #Johnson shot a blistering 10-of-13 from downtown, but #Justin #Powell, #Jaylin #Williams and #Allen #Flanigan combined to commit 17 of the #Tigers’ 19 turnovers, as #Bruce #Pearl’s squad committed at least 17 turnovers for the seventh time in nine games this season.

“You score 85 points, you shoot 52 percent for the game, 52 percent from 3, you make 15 3s, that’s a game you should win,” #Pearl said. “Unless you give up 97, unless you turn the ball over 19 times, unless you have a hard time ending possessions.”

#Auburn (6-3, 0-1 SEC) will return to the court #Saturday against #Texas A&M. #Here are AL.com’s key takeaways from #Wednesday’s SEC opener:

#Turnovers remain an issue for a young #Auburn team

#Auburn’s 19 turnovers against #Arkansas weren’t a season-high for the #Tigers, but they weren’t far off. #Auburn committed 22 turnovers in its early-season loss to UCF a month ago, but #Wednesday’s total marked the second-most turnovers by the #Tigers in a game this season, as #Pearl’s young squad continues to have trouble taking care of the ball.

#Seven of those turnovers came from #Powell, who also had nine assists on a night in which he otherwise struggled offensively, shooting just 1-of-8 from the field and 0-for-3 from deep. #Flanigan (who had a double-double with 19 points and 10 rebounds) and #Williams (13 points) turned the ball over five times apiece in 30 minutes of action. #All three had an alarmingly high turnover rate against #Arkansas, with #Powell turning it over on 36 percent of his possessions, #Flanigan on 32 percent of his and #Williams on 40 percent of his.

#But with 12 of those turnovers coming from the point guard spot, where #Powell and #Flanigan are still being asked to play out of position, it was tough sledding for #Auburn.

“I’m not hating on them and I’m not mad at them,” #Pearl said. “I think JP and #Al are doing as good a job as they can do. I’d say could we advance pass the ball a little bit more, get up the floor, get it out of their hands, attack pressure a little bit so they’re not having to bring up the ball all the time against pressure; could we get it in, get it down the floor a little before that ball pressure takes over? #Possibly.”

#Twelve of #Auburn’s turnovers came in the second half, leading to 20 #Arkansas points, with seven of those turnovers coming in the game’s final 6:30 as the #Razorbacks turned a two-point advantage into an easy double-digit win down the stretch.

#Devan #Cambridge needed this game

#It has been a rough start to the season for #Devan #Cambridge on the offensive end, but the sophomore came out of his funk against #Arkansas.

#Cambridge scored a season-high 15 points on 5-of-6 shooting, with all six of his attempts coming from 3-point range, and added four rebounds and no turnovers in 21 minutes #Wednesday night. #It was #Cambridge’s best offensive performance of the year, and his best overall game since a double-double (13 points and 10 rebound) against #Saint #Joseph’s in the season opener.

#It was the kind of night #Cambridge needed, at least from a shooting standpoint. #He entered the game shooting just 28.1 percent on the season, including just 22.2 percent from beyond the arc. #He knocked down multiple 3-pointers in three of #Auburn’s first eight games, with two apiece against #Gonzaga and #Troy, and a 4-for-11 effort against #South #Alabama. #Wednesday, though, felt more like one of those flashes #Cambridge showed as a freshman last year, when he had blistering 3-point outbursts against #South #Carolina and LSU.

#Cambridge still needs to show he can have this kind of shooting night away from #Auburn #Arena, but #Wednesday’s showing against #Arkansas was a step in the right direction for the sophomore on that end of the court.

“Every game, I know #Devan’s going to hit two or three big 3′s, you know,” #Johnson said. “I wouldn’t say he was struggling; I mean, he missed a few shots, but he comes to practice every day with a positive attitude. #He comes in the locker room with a positive attitude, so I know his time’s coming. #He’s going to keep shooting. #He has great confidence in his shot. I’ve got a lot of confidence in him for him, so I knew this was coming. #He’s going to keep building off this game for the rest of the season.”

#Jamal #Johnson’s career night

#For the second game in a row, #Jamal #Johnson got it done off the bench for #Auburn. The redshirt sophomore scored a career-high 21 points against #Arkansas, shooting 7-of-11 overall and 5-of-7 from beyond the arc.

#While #Flanigan’s double-double was big, #Johnson’s career night was arguably the brightest spot for #Auburn against #Arkansas, adding three steals while committing zero turnovers in 23 minutes off the bench. #It was the fourth game this season that #Johnson scored in double figures, including the second in a row following a 14-point performance against #Appalachian #State.

“A career-high was great and all, but I want to win,” #Johnson said. “I want our team to win. #Our main goal is win the SEC regular season championship. #That’s our main goal right here this year. The numbers and all that stuff, that’s fine, but I want to win. #Our whole team wants to win and our coaching staff — everybody wants to win. I mean, that’s fine and all, but we all want to win so
