#Video shows a police officer in #California pinning down and punching his K-9 partner during what cops say was a training exercise.
A bystander recorded the horrifying cellphone footage on #Monday near a fire station in #Vacaville, a city about 35 miles from #Sacramento.
“I heard a dog crying, when I looked, the officer was punching the dog over and over and got shocked about it, only thing I could think was recording,” #Robert #Palomino wrote on #Facebook.
#Palomino said he was going to his warehouse when he witnessed the shocking interaction, adding that he was sorry he hadn’t confronted the cop.
“I’m sure he saw me,” #Palomino wrote. “He stopped beating the dog when he saw me and went behind those trailers in the video.”
The #Vacaville #Police #Department said it was investigating the incident, adding that it happened after the pooch became “aggressive” during a training exercise.
“We understand how disturbing the video appears to many who view it and the range of emotions it creates,” the department wrote on #Facebook #Tuesday.
#However, it added that the video doesn’t show how “the canine became aggressive towards his handler” moments prior.
“Although our canines appear to be pets… they are quite different in many ways,” the post said. “If left unguided by a handler, the decisions they make could lead to the injury of the dog, an officer or an innocent community member.”
#Capt. #Matt #Lydon told The #Vacaville #Reporter that the officer, who hasn’t been publicly identified, has been training with the dog for about three or four months and has no prior experience with K-9s.
The pooch had successfully performed during a narcotics search scenario and was rewarded with a toy — which it then refused to let go, #Lydon said.
“That angered the dog. #It lunges at him and attempts to bite him,” #Lydon said.
The officer had to act quickly to rectify the situation, #Lydon said, adding “We don’t know what the handler experienced.”
#Palomino told the newspaper that he saw the cop punch the dog at least 10 times before he decided to begin recording.
#He and several others on social media found the incident shocking.
“It got me completely confused. #Never seen anything like that before,” #Palomino said.
“He was beating his partner, his coworker, his best friend.”
