The important virtual visits left by the pandemic at the UOH Institute and School of Social Sciences


The confinement and the impossibility of face-to-face classes, although they complicated university education -in general-, also had a positive side: it generated the opportunity to have virtual seminars and webinars of the highest international level, with exhibitors who generated an immeasurable contribution to academic and student reflection.

The exceptional situation in which we live, derived from the confinement, virtuality and physical distancing caused by the #Covid-19 pandemic, has generated multiple changes in various aspects of our daily lives. #And #Higher #Education does not escape this reality.

The inexistence of classes and face-to-face events has forced universities to impose great challenges and overcome various difficulties, including stress management, motivation and distance learning.

#It is in this last aspect, where a rich dynamic of collaboration has been generated between experts, academics and teachers from all over the world, through virtual participation in numerous seminars, webinars and talks that perhaps had not been given. so easily, without the obligation of virtual classrooms and a university life away from campus.

#Both the #Institute and the #School of #Social #Sciences of the #University of O’#Higgins (ICSO-ECSO) want to value this positive aspect in such a complicated situation, since they added during the academic year a series of high-level academic reflection initiatives , which allowed students, teachers and academics to interact with leading researchers and scientists.

“#Virtual visits”

“The #Learning and #Development subject, from the #Psychology career at the #University of O’#Higgins, unites two sister disciplines: psychology and biology. They share the object of study and even -on occasions- explanatory methods and analogies”, points out #Dr. #Rocío #Angulo, academic and director of the #Institute of #Social #Sciences (ICSO) of the #University, as an introduction to suggest the relevance of one of its most important visits in 2020.

“#This year we were lucky to have the visit of #Dr. #Fernando #Ortiz, neuroscientist, biologist and excellent disseminator, who currently works at the #Autonomous #University of #Chile. #During his visit he presented us with some of the most relevant evolutionary concepts to understand the phylogeny and ontogeny of psychological processes, jumping the often arbitrary limits of our disciplines “, explains the researcher ICSO.

#In the opinion of #Dr. #Angulo, these collaborations help students to have a “multidisciplinary and more open vision of important topics in psychology and it is also a good instance for them to learn about the research of their respective professors”.

#Likewise, he comments that the third-year students have received the visit of different international first-level colleagues who, within the framework of the #Memory #Consulting I subject, have presented their most recent research, sharing their main findings even before being published.

#Among the invited researchers are doctors #Carmina #Saldaña, from the #University of #Barcelona; #Nerea #Aldunate, from the #School of #Psychology of the #Catholic #University of #Chile; #Vanetza #Quezada, from the #University of #Chile; #Diana #Martella, from the #Autonomous #University of #Chile and #Dr. #Marisol #Basilio, researcher from the #University of #Cambridge.

“The pandemic has had an adverse impact on us and has faced us with multiple difficulties in teaching. #However, trying to see the glass as half full, it has also opened up the possibility of sharing and working collaboratively with people inside and outside of our institutions of belonging “, explains #Dra. #Rocío #Angulo.

#In this sense, #Dr. #Rocío #Angulo points out that the university is not simply a place where professionals are trained. “#It is a space, even though this pandemic has forced us to make it virtual, where knowledge is generated and transmitted, and where we essentially interact not only with each other, but also with society in general. #In fact, the #Institute and #School of #Sciences They have given numerous open classes for the general community. #We understand that there is a social responsibility in our work and somehow, although it may seem paradoxical, the contingency has allowed us to reach people who may not have come to our home due to lack of time or need for transportation and yet they have joined the virtual activities. “
