Covid-19 led to massive rescheduling of tournaments and now there is saturation of matches

#In the toughest moments the world of football had no choice but to look at the minor leagues that were launched while in the rest of the countries the stoppage was absolute

The COVID-19 pandemic has absolutely marked the global roadmap in 2020 and of course, sport and football have been significantly affected, so much so that the forced stoppage has given way to congestion and even saturation for this phase end of the year and the next.

#All calendars were determined by the coronavirus. #All league and national team competitions had to stop for several months.

#In the toughest moments the world of football had no choice but to look at minor leagues that were launched while in the rest of the countries the stoppage was absolute. #Belarus, #Nicaragua, #Turkmenistan or #Burundi were the ‘salvation’ for football lovers, eager to see the ball roll.

#International and national organizations had no choice but to get down to work and, in agreement with the health authorities, establish strict protocols for the time of return when the pandemic allowed it.

The calendars were blown up. #Large international tournaments, such as the #Eurocup or the #America’s #Cup, were canceled, not forgetting the #Olympic #Games or continental tournaments of lower categories.

#Numerous 2019/20 national leagues failed to resume. #Some proclaimed champions with what had been played, as for example in #France, and others were finished at full speed and without an audience in the stands.

The #Champions #League and the #Europa #League, the two major #European club tournaments, were played in #Portugal and #Germany, respectively, under the final phase format and without an audience. #Bayern #Munich and #Sevilla were crowned in #Lisbon and #Cologne. The women’s ‘#Champions’ was played in #Bilbao and #San #Sebastián also under the same system with a new title for #Olympique #Lyon.,

#In #Asia, the ‘#Champions’ is also being played at full speed in bubble mode in #Qatar and the #Copa #Libertadores, #America’s flagship competition, was also affected, so much so that it is still pending resolution, scheduled for #January 2021.

#As if it were a layout of dominoes, practically the entire calendar has been falling and from that stop, with the players training at home as best they could, it has gone to congestion.

The clubs have barely been able to make the preseason, the 2020/21 campaign has started the race again in all competitions, with little room for maneuver, with almost no rest.

#Casualties due to positives in COVID-19 and injuries have become an inevitable consequence despite the fact that FIFA, under the auspices of the #International #Board (IFAB) agreed for the sake of health to allow five changes per team in each match instead of three.

The health of the players, as FIFA #President #Gianni #Infantino has reiterated, is the most important thing. The footballers’ unions, led by the international, FIFPro, have warned of this serious problem.

“The current management of the match schedule during this emergency period lacks sufficient considerations for your health, well-being and performance, and requires urgent and ongoing review by the competition organizers,” FIFPro said.

“#Footballers are already suffering from fatigue due to the ongoing competition cycle, back-to-back matches and lack of adequate rest and recovery during the #European summer period. #This, in turn, puts them at increased risk of stress and injury. The task of caring for soccer players must be the most important principle throughout the period of the emergency calendar implemented during the COVID-19 pandemic, “says the global union.

#Even so, it seems impossible to avoid ‘non-stop football’ to make up for lost time and tournaments after the economic effects of the pandemic have been tremendous for clubs, players and other institutions.

#Carolina #Guillén, #Andrés #Agulla and #José del #Valle, review the best, the worst, the most surprising and the return of the year in football during 2020.

#Christmas will hardly offer rest. The leagues have more than tight schedules and the teams are in overdrive as well. There are hardly any spaces.

#In #Europe, for example, the national teams qualified for the #European #Championship, moved to #June 11-July 11, 2021, will have little options to prepare it with friendlies and will have to get ready with the first matches of the qualifying phase for the 2022 #World #Cup.

The #America’s #Cup will be played on those same dates in 2021, the #Africa #Cup has been moved from 2021 to #January 2022 in #Cameroon and the #Women’s #Euro #Cup has also passed to 2022 (#July 6-July 31 in #Cameroon).

#Young people, many of them already installed in the elite, do not fall short. They also have the #European U21, whose final phase will be played in two parts in #Hungary and #Slovenia, first between #March 24 and 31, the group round, and from #May 31 to #June 6 the final matches. #Other lower level tournaments, on the other hand, had to be suspended.

FIFA finally decided not to start the new #Club #World #Cup with more teams in 2021, scheduled for #China, and passed the one set for this year, with the traditional format with seven teams, to #November-December 2021 in #Japan.

The ‘#Bureau’ of the FIFA #Council also decided that the U20 and U17 #Women’s #World #Cups will not be played in 2021 and will be played in the planned countries, #Costa #Rica and #India, respectively, in 2022.

#It also agreed to cancel the 2021 editions of the U20 and U18 #World #Cups, and to name #Indonesia and #Peru, hosts of those tournaments in 2021, organizers of the 2023 editions.

#In his last telematic press conference, after the FIFA council meeting, #Infantino considered it decisive “to find the balance”, a task that in his opinion “is not easy”, so he ordered “to develop a series of rules with a detailed protocol, which tries to protect the health of the players, the most important thing “.

#For the moment, despite insistent attempts, no such solution and balance have been found. The congestion marks the new life of football.
