The S6 #MaxV is #Roborock’s most powerful and advanced model. #It’s not among the cheapest robot vacuum cleaners out there, but it’s so easy to set up and maintain it’s worth it. #Not to mention that it is also one of the few that really sucks hard and scrubs. #At #Gizmodo en #Español we have spent a couple of weeks with him.
#Let’s start with a review of its technical characteristics. The S6MaxV is slightly larger (9.6cm high x 35cm in diameter) than other robot vacuum cleaners including models as powerful as the #Roomba i7 +. #Part of the blame goes to the peculiar elevated module that houses part of the LIDAR. #Actually the larger size is completely irrelevant unless we want it to go under an extraordinarily low sofa. The S6 #MaxV manages to reach every corner and under almost any furniture.
#At the navigation level, the #Roborock S6 #MaxV has two cameras capable of registering its surroundings in stereoscopic vision at 30fps and the aforementioned LIDAR. #One of the cameras has an infrared sensor, so the robot also sees perfectly (in black and white) in the dark.
#One of the funniest things about the S6 #MaxV is that the application that manages it allows you to follow what the robot is seeing on your mobile. #Simply enter video mode to see where it is going and control its movements to inadvertently spy on what is happening in our own home. #Roborock ensures that all the operations that the robot needs to move are performed locally on the #Qualcomm APQ8053 chip. #In other words, what we see through their cameras is not even uploaded to any server, so unless someone hacks it from our own #Wi-Fi we should not have concerns about privacy beyond those who have physical access to the robot and the home wifi.
#In addition to the cameras, the lower part is full of sensors to detect obstacles, cables or unevenness. #This entire cluster of sensors is governed by something #Roborock calls #ReactiveAI. #Under this name is a locally integrated neural network that recognizes objects and acts accordingly.
#As the S6 #MaxV explored my house for the first time, the robot was effectively marking points on the map with different icons to mark the position of cables or other problem objects on the ground. The AI has even been programmed to recognize dog poop and thus avoid a problem #Really unpleasant that the #Roomba and other robot vacuum cleaners had. The system works so well that it even avoids what it doesn’t know what it is. #If it bumps into an object that it cannot recognize as a toy, the robot simply avoids it just in case.
#Does #ReactiveAI have any weak points? #Yes, and they are the objects that you decide are not an obstacle. #When the robot decides that it can step over something it can be extremely stubborn in its endeavor. #This was precisely what happened to me with the cloth that surrounds the #Christmas tree. I had to manually separate the robot because it fought a fierce battle with the fabric, bent on reaching the center of the tree. #Maybe he was mad at #Santa for not receiving gifts.
The forbidden zone
#Carpets are not, in theory, considered a hindrance, but as #Gizmodo regulars will know, the carpet in my living room is a robot vacuum trap. #His hair is probably too long and thick. #That combined with a table too low, it was already a death trap for the #Roomba i7 +. #Now it has also been for the #Roborock S6 #MaxV, but for different reasons. The robot insisted on staying in a spot on the carpet, probably because it could not get out of there, and in the end it managed to get one of the wool hairs on the carpet to get caught in the auxiliary brush. I had to turn off the robot and untangle the fiber.
The process did not take me a couple of minutes, but it certifies that we still do not have a robot vacuum cleaner one hundred percent immune to the obstacles at home. #At this point it is where the application’s function shines with its own light that allows defining areas of the map where the robot is prohibited from entering. #It is extremely intuitive to use. #We just have to draw the shape of the area where we do not want it to get on the map and the robot will respect it scrupulously to the point that, if it was already inside it when we draw it, it will refuse to move unless we remove it. The function is just one example of one of the things that I liked the most about the S6 #MaxV (and something that is extensible to the rest of #Roborock robots): its application is extremely intuitive and easy to use to the point that it is fun to do it .
The second important point is that this ease of use extends to the robot itself. The S6 #MaxV is easy to use and clean. #Your 430 milliliter deposit gives us a certain period of time before we have to empty it, but that period depends exclusively on how dirty the house is. #Fortunately, it is very easy to empty. #Roborock recommends cleaning the tank and brushes once a week with normal use, and the particle filter once every two weeks.
The battery is another of its strengths. #It lasts well over an hour (116 minutes) before the energy level drops below 20% and the robot interrupts its tasks to return to base to “eat.” #An hour is considerably more than it takes to clean a moderately dirty three-bedroom house.
#In addition to vacuuming, the S6 #MaxV has a mopping function whereby a damp cloth runs over the floor to make it even cleaner. The function is activated automatically when we connect the 300ml water tank to the bottom and works by gravity. The water drips down a conduit to moisten a removable mop that is the one that cleans the floor. #Obviously this mop does pick up anything on the floor, so the manufacturer strongly recommends using the function when the robot has already removed the worst by vacuuming.
I can’t say that it works badly, but the same thing happens to me as with other robot vacuum cleaners with a floor scrubbing function. The robot components prohibit the use of cleaning products because they could damage the device and I am not entirely comfortable scrubbing with just water. #In any case, the scrubbing system of this robot and of any other is not an intensive cleaning and at no time will it save you from having to hit the mop on any occasion. #It is best to consider the mop function as a way to more thoroughly remove dust from the floor to extend the time we can let go until the next time we grip the mop vigorously. #Helps, but does not replace.
The biggest sin of the #Roborock S6 #MaxV is that it is not the cheapest model in its line of benefits (#Right now it costs 649 euros in #Amazon). #It’s cheaper than iRobot’s #Roomba or equivalent #Ecovacs models, yes, but there are some robots like the #Proscenic M7 #Pro that have the same power and are a bit more affordable.
#Price aside, the S6 #Max V is a very solid alternative to consider. #It is silent, resistant and sucks with greater power than the average robot. #It also scrubs, if that’s what you’re looking for, and it’s one of the easiest to use and maintain robot vacuum cleaners I’ve had the pleasure of testing. #His biggest problem is that he can get a little territorial with some obstacles. #Fortunately, the application allows you to tame it until it leaves us the perfect house without wanting to eat anything that is in it. #Highly recommended
