Under the motto #VolverAEncontrarnos, will be developed between January 3 and 24 the XXVIII edition of the International Festival Santiago a Mil 2021, which since 1994 has focused on the power of encounter that the arts, theater and people have to transform society.
After months of physical isolation, the paralysis of the sector and the closures of theaters and theaters, this call becomes crucial when it comes to resuming links through the arts.
For Carmen Romero, general director of Fundación Teatro a Mil, when asked about how they took this version in the middle of the Covid-19 pandemic, pointed out that “very carefully, but with great courage. We need to meet again, look into each other’s eyes, see theater, be together in the streets, in the theaters, and we have prepared these 8 months with Teatroamil.tv, thinking and rethinking how to go out and how to be again in this edition of the festival, which is number 28 ″.
“It is a long time, but as we said, this bug will not be the one that leaves us in the houses in the summer, we will meet again, we must have self-care. Take all the measures and precautions, we are going to take them, but we also need the public’s self-care ”, he added.
While Santiago Montt, Vice President of Corporate Affairs BHP Minerals Americas, stated that “we as a company share the motto of Angela Merkel, who said that culture is a commodity and we have already demonstrated that with more than 20 years of this association with Teatro a Mil, which has resulted in a virtuous work ”.
“In which Teatro a Mil today is a citizen party, it is something that all Chileans feel part of and this year is very special, because art, on the one hand, has been very close to all of us. We have felt the importance of art, the theater has expanded a lot via Zoom and thanks to the creativity of the artists themselves we have been able to access many works ”, he pointed out.
Presented by Fundación Teatro a Mil y Escondida | BHP; under the Law of Cultural Donations and with the support of the Ministry of Culture, Arts and Heritage, it will be an unprecedented festival, in 360 ° and according to the new reality and the health and care protocols; a multi-format and multi-stage one, a hybrid between digital and face-to-face, with staging in theaters, street and unconventional spaces, as well as a forceful online programming designed for the virtual stages of Teatroamil.TV, devices and media.
More than 150 shows from 18 countries, including Paraguay as a Latin American debutant, articulate a new program impregnated with contingent themes that challenge the present through theater, dance, music, performance and circus, in addition to recent and recovered formats during the pandemic, such as the shows and works by Zoom, and the radio drama.
Santiago a Mil 2021 will have a presence in more than 15 theaters in the Metropolitan region that have already reopened or are about to reopen their doors under strict sanitary protocols, such as the GAM Center, the main venue of the festival, and also the Municipal Theater of Las Condes, Matucana 100, UC Theater, Puente Theater, Camilo Henríquez Theater, Chilean National Theater , Teatro La Memoria, in addition to special alliances with the Aldea del Encuentro, Gran Circo Teatro, and the Amphitheater of Fine Arts, which will allow adding an abundant cross-sectional programming.
Likewise, the festival will enable digital and alternative scenarios such as the teatroamil.tv screens and the arrival on open TV and radio, in alliance with TVN and Bío Bío, which will allow it to reach different territories.
While, Alejandra Garcés, Director of Social Value at Escondida BHP, said about this new version that “this year is super special because these months have shown that culture is important to everyone, it has accompanied us, it has been a space of comfort, comfort and it is very important that we continue to support the festival because the culture sector needs to move on ”.

This year, the festival will have a special emphasis on national programming, as a way to contribute to the reactivation of the sector, so, for the first time, the festival of performing arts lwill also bequeath to the 15 regions of Chile thanks to the “Creative Territories” program, which highlights local creation through a show for each region of the country. In this way, Chile becomes a great stage that connects with various communities and opens up new access options, face-to-face or digital, for people.
In addition, thanks to technologies and despite the circumstances, the festival continues to be international, presenting great creators and creators through foci such as Latin American Creative Women, the German company Rimini Protokoll and Great Masters that may be digitally.
