Uruguay reached this Thursday a new record of active cases of covid-19 reaching 1,022 after 129 new positives were detected in the day, detailed the National Emergency System (Sinae) in its daily report.
With these figures, the South American country reached 5,117 accumulated cases since the health emergency was decreed on March 13.
During this day, according to the report, 3,830 tests and 416,093 were reached.
Currently, the department (province) most affected is still Montevideo with 564 cases, while in second place is Canelones (south) with 193.
Furthermore, in Cerro Largo (this) there are 42 active cases and in Rivera (Northeast) there are 53. These two departments, both with a land border with Brazil, have been among the most affected throughout the pandemic and among those that have most concerned the health authorities.
For its part, Colonia (southwest) adds 34 cases, Soriano (southwest) 31, Artigas (north) 25, Maldonado (southeast) 20 and Tacuarembó (center) 17.
On the other hand, the report indicates that there are 11 people in intensive treatment and that a new death was registered, so There are already 74 people who died from the aforementioned disease in the eastern country.
Rafael Radi and Henry Cohen, two of the members of the Honorary Scientific Advisory Group (GACH), which provides assistance to the Government in the management of the coronavirus, repeatedly pointed out the It is important that the country remains in a daily double digit figure so that the situation does not get out of control.
In accordance with this, they pointed out that 100 daily positives are a limit that can complicate the health situation in Uruguay.
The tracking and isolation of cases is, so far, the most effective of the weapons with which the South American country fights against the pandemic, favored by its low population -barely 3.5 million inhabitants- and its low density -less than 20 Uruguayans per square kilometer-.
While it is far from the problems faced by its neighbors Brazil and Argentina, its reality is in accordance with the surface size. The country has about 3.4 million inhabitants, of which about 1.3 million are in Montevideo.
The Government is betting on “Responsible freedom” of the population as a way to avoid a decline in economic activity, which was ruled out for the moment by the president Luis Lacalle Pou.
