The anger of British fishermen over Brexit: “The traitor Boris Johnson has given us a coup de grace and we will not forget it”

#For the #England fishermen, he #Brexit trade deal signed by the #British #Prime #Minister, #Boris #Johnson, constitutes a treason as it maintains the access of some #European #Union (EU) ships to the rich coastal waters of the #United #Kingdom.

#Johnson, who led the 2016 #Brexit campaign, presented the deal struck on #Christmas #Eve as a way to regain control of the fate of the UK, which includes a “#Independent coastal state with full control” of its waters.

#But in #Newlyn, a former fishing port of #Cornwall #As far from #London as #Paris, there is a feeling of anger so it is perceived as a #White card #Johnson so that EU ships keep cruising the rich coastal fishing zone of 9-19 nautical kilometers.

“#Boris the traitor has given us a coup de grace and we will not forget it”, declared to the news agency #Reuters #Phil #Mitchell, 51, aboard the 23-meter long #Govenek de #Ladram ship that he captains. “#We had the opportunity to regain control and we let it go”, he assured.

“They were happy to use us for your campaign and when the moment has come to give the push, we have been pushed and thrown from a great height”#Added #Mitchell, a #Brexit supporter who believes that wasted a historic opportunity once again by leaders living 470km away in #London.

#From the boats of #Newlyn, the largest fishing port in #England by tonnage landed, to the fishermen’s houses perched above the harbor, the feeling of betrayal it spreads everywhere.

#Anger hints at the motivations for the stormy #Brexit crisis, which lasted five years, and the limits of the deal #Johnson has tried to impose as a final note on the 48 years of relationship between the #United #Kingdom and the #European #Union.

“They have sold us”, said #David #Stevens, 46-year-old captain of the #Crystal #Sea, bottom trawler with two 24.5-meter long lines. “#For us the lowest blow is the continuity of access by EU vessels within the 19 kilometer limit,” he continued.

“The sector was used as a pawn all the way, presented as the reason to leave, and in the end they have thrown us overboard”#Stevens said.

“#Betrayal of #Brexit”

The promise to retake control of #British waters helped #Brexit supporters like #Johnson win the 2016 referendum, in which the 52% The #United #Kingdom voted in favor of leaving the EU.

#For many fishermen from #Cornwall to #Scotland, EU membership and the decline in fishing go hand in hand. A majority group in this sector voted in favor of #Brexit.

The UK fishing fleet has significantly reduced in the last 30 years, going from more than 11,000 ships to less than 6,000. #More than half were built before 1991, in a country surrounded by the sea that is a net importer of fish.

The #Newlyn fishermen claim they were betrayed in 1973, when the then #Conservative #Prime #Minister #Edward #Heath joined the #United #Kingdom in the #European project, and they argue that it also They are being betrayed at the time of departure.

“#In 1973, #Ted #Heath sacrificed fishing to get the deal to enter #Europe“, he pointed #Stevens, a #Brexit supporter who fishes for lime, ray and turbot. “#When leaving #Europe, #Boris has done the same, but this time it’s worse”, #He added.

#Johnson’s agreement with the EU ensures the trade in goods with the bloc without tariffs or quotas, vital for sectors much larger than fishing. #But fishing was one of the last issues to be addressed, and the EU negotiated with hardness on behalf of the politically influential coastal communities of #France and other countries that have fished #British waters for centuries.

#Johnson said the deal increases the quota for #British fishermen up to 25% of the value of the EU catch in UK waters, and will be carried out in stages over a period of 5 years.

“I can assure the big fans of fishing in this country that as a result of this agreement we will be able to catch and eat prodigious amounts of extra fish.”declared the conservative on #December 24 about the agreement.

#While the #British #Government has said that some EU ships will have access to UK territorial waters during the 5-year adjustment period, the fishermen maintain that in practice the ships of the block will retain the rights forever.

#Given the complexity of the agreement texts, even specialist lawyers are not sure of the full details. The #British #Department of #Agriculture refused to immediately clarify the rules of the 12-mile (19-kilometer) limit.
