Baker Mayfield was in a ‘surly mood’ and fired off ‘a perfect day of practice,’ says OC Alex Van Pelt

CLEVELAND, #Ohio — #Browns offensive coordinator #Alex #Van #Pelt knew that #Baker #Mayfield meant business the moment he set foot inside the indoor practice facility on #Wednesday afternoon.

“When I walked in, [Mayfield was in] a little bit of a surly mood and just a different day so I could tell that he was locked in and ready to go,’’ #Van #Pelt said #Thursday as the #Browns waited for their facility to open back up from yet another COVID-19 shutdown so they could practice again. “He was very sharp. #He was laser focused. #He ripped every ball he threw and bounced one off of a helmet that was just absolutely fired. #He was locked in.’’

#Van #Pelt, a former NFL quarterback, said the session — closed to the media when it was moved indoors — was incredible.

“He threw the ball with extreme accuracy,’’ he said. “Everything was perfect. I think he had the perfect day of practice. #We didn’t have a long practice, but he was perfect, and yes, statistically, yes.”

#Van #Pelt said he expects #Mayfield to rebound #Sunday in the “win-and-in” game against the #Steelers after fumbling three times in the 23-16 loss to the #Jets, twice on strip-sacks and once on a fourth-and-inches sneak at the #Jets’ 16 with 1:18 remaining. #After the game, #Mayfield said “I failed the team” and walked out of his press conference after answering one question.

“Obviously, expect him to bounce back,’’ #Van #Pelt said. “Probably was not his best game – he’d be the first to tell you. #Obviously, he’s kicking himself for the fumble there at the end. #He’s a guy that’s resilient. #He has had his back against the wall multiple times in his career, and he comes out swinging.

“That’s what we expect from him. #He’s been great in meetings. #We’ve had really good meetings, a little bit longer than normal at this point, just making sure everything is detailed up and the fact that we could not get together until later yesterday.’’

#Mayfield’s surliness carried over into his #Wednesday press conference, when he was asked if he’d channel his anger at himself toward the #Steelers.

“No, I was thinking I was probably going to use it as a disadvantage and maybe drop the ball four more times, I do not know,’’ #Mayfield said sarcastically.

#Perhaps #Mayfield will be in a better mood later #Thursday when his top four receivers return to practice from the COVID-19 reserve list: #Jarvis #Landry, #Rashard #Higgins, #Donovan #Peoples-Jones and #KhaDarel #Hodge, who were all close contacts of linebacker B.J. #Goodson and never tested positive.

#For #Landry, it was his first missed game in his career after 110 straight, some of which he played in excruciating pain. #This season alone, he came back early from hip surgery and played through two broken rips suffered in the victory over the #Colts in #Week 5.

“I’m sure that killed him,’’ said #Van #Pelt. “That’s tough as a player and you’re a competitive guy like he is and what he means to this team. #For him not to be there personally, I am sure it was tough for him. #It was really hard not to have him there as an offense, as well. #Really happy to get him back in the building.”

#Mayfield got more good news on #Thursday when a report surfaced that #Steelers #Pro #Bowl defenders T.J. #Watt and #Cam #Heyward will sit out the game.

“That’s part of the deal this time of the year, but it’s not really about them,’’ said #Van #Pelt. “It’s about us and it’s about our focus on our work and what we need to get done. #That’s a decision that they made – we’ll see – but at the same time, not really focused on who’s not going to be in there. #We’re really focused on who we are, what we’re going to get done what we are trying to accomplish.”

#Van #Pelt noted that the #Steelers are deep defensively and sound schematically even without #Watt and #Heyward.

“They’re obviously a very talented group,’’ he said. “You take two first-rounders out of the mix, and you still have a bunch of first-rounders on that defense. #Once again, it is about us. #It is about improving our technique, our fundamentals, protecting the quarterback and getting the ball out and rhythm and on time, and those things all play a part of it.”

#Van #Pelt wasn’t the only one who noticed that #Mayfield had an early #Steelers scowl on.

“He was locked in,’’ running back #Nick #Chubb said. “He was focused. #He wasn’t saying much. #He was going out there, practicing hard and leading us. #That’s about it.”
