China authorizes the commercialization of the first vaccine against Covid-19

The country where the current #Sars-CoV-2 pandemic began just over a year ago already has a tool to prevent the disease caused by this coronavirus.

#Ahead of the winter season, #China approved its first COVID-19 vaccine for general public use on #Thursday. The licensed vaccine is the one developed by the pharmaceutical giant #Sinopharm.

The laboratory has not yet released detailed data on the efficacy of the vaccine, but its developer, the #Beijing #Institute of #Biological #Products, a unit of #China #National #Biotec #Group (CNBG), a subsidiary of #Sinopharm, said yesterday that its vaccine was 79.34% effective in preventing people from developing the disease.

The approval of use was announced by the #National #Administration of #Medical #Products. #Before, it had already been approved by the #United #Arab #Emirates.

#Although #China has not approved vaccines with the same speed as the #United #States or the #United #Kingdom, for months it has been inoculating its population with vaccines that are developed in the country. #In #July, the launched an emergency use program for essential workers and others at high risk of infection. #As of #December 15, more than 4.5 million vaccines had been injected: two vaccines developed by CNBG and one from #Sinovac #Biotech.

#To date, #China has at least five vaccines, the one developed by #Sinovac, the one from CNBG, the one from #CanSino #Biologics and the vaccine from the #Chinese #Academy of #Sciences, in late-stage trials.

#According to the #South #China #Morning #Post, #China would vaccinate up to 50 million people from high-priority groups ahead of the #Lunar #New #Year holiday in #February.

The price? #It is not yet known how much this vaccine will cost, but it is believed that it will be free in a first stage.

#It is an inactivated virus vaccine, that is, the #Sars-CoV-2 virus is inoculated, which was previously inactivated through a chemical process, so it is not capable of getting sick, but the immune system can generate antibodies against the virus and not just against #Spike or S protein, like #Pfizer’s or #Oxford’s #Astrazeneca vaccine.

#In previous studies, this #Sinopharm vaccine has been shown to be effective in producing antibodies in volunteers given two doses of the vaccine 28 days apart.

#Before that, the animal model of rodents, rabbits and monkeys also showed large amounts of antibodies, with almost no side effects.
