The director general of the World Health Organization (WHO), Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, released last Friday an alarming warning about the serious situation that is being experienced around the world, since in the last four weeks there have been more cases of contagion of coronavirus than in the first six months pandemic.

In addition, Tedros warned at the same press conference that in Europe Y North America There is a remarkable scare in hospitals and intensive care units (UCI) because of COVID-19, which is why he insisted on the need for countries to promote all the tools available to fight the virus.

Vaccines give hope

Despite the worrying data he announced, Tedros also sent an optimistic message related to the information released by companies such as Moderna or Pfizer regarding the effectiveness of their vaccines: “This week there have been good news about vaccine trials, what keeps giving us hopes of ending the pandemic. At the same time, we must continue to use the tools we have to interrupt the chains of transmission and save lives now ”.

Finally, the WHO director general stressed that the COVID-19 pandemic is a “clear reminder” of the “Intimate relationship” between humans, animals and the planet: “We cannot protect and promote human health without paying attention to the health of animals and the health of our environment.”

More than 665,000 infections daily

On Saturday they registered 665,668 new cases of coronavirus in the last 24 hours worldwide, which marked, for the second consecutive day, a new record in the daily count of those affected, according to the global balance of Johns Hopkins University. In addition, this figure was well above the 650,000 infections detected on Friday. The global figure of deceased, for its part, stands at 1.372.274. Meanwhile, more than 36.8 million people have managed to overcome the disease.

The danger of antimicrobial resistance

Recently, Tedros also advised that antimicrobial resistance is “just as dangerous” as the spread of the coronavirus and one of the “greatest threats” to health because can end medical progress that have been achieved in the last century and leave the population “defenseless” against infections that can be easily treated.

“Although antibiotics are a key focus, antimicrobial resistance also includes drug resistance for HIV, malaria, neglected tropical diseases and more pathologies, explained the director general of the WHO on the occasion of the celebration of the World Awareness week that this year has the motto ‘Antimicrobials: handle them with care’.
