NASA publishes audio of the “rover” traveling to Mars

NASA released an audio of 60 seconds captured on October 19 by one of the scout vehicle’s microphones Perseverance, which is currently on an interplanetary flight on its way to Mars.

“Interplanetary sounds from the Perseverance rover” it can be heard on SoundCloud and actually picks up the subtle sounds of the rover’s own mechanisms.

Sound waves they do not propagate in open space, but they do travel well on solid objects, which is why NASA needs microphones to monitor the rover’s machinery.

Normally the “rover” remains inactive and most of its equipment is off, and it is only activated during the verifications, as it was done on this occasion.

Technology to have a record of Mars

The vehicle has two microphones, one installed in the SuperCam camera and another called EDL that is designed to record the process of entering the atmosphere, descent and landing device, planned for the beginning of the 2021.

Dave Gruel, Mars 2020 EDL Microphone and Camera Subsystem Principal Engineer explained:

“The microphone that we included to listen to what it is like to land on Mars was able to capture the Perseverance thermal system, which operates in the vacuum of space through mechanical vibrations”

And the engineer pointed out that “getting sound from landing is a good thing, not a necessity. If it does not happen, it will not prevent the mission of the rover in the Jezero crater in the least. Even if only part of the landing sequence were captured on audio, it would be amazing

NASA’s rover, launched last July, is set to reach the Martian surface on February 18, 2021, specifically in the Jezero crater, an ancient lake 45 kilometers in diameter.

The mission of the new scout vehicle will consist of look for rocks that contain possible signs of ancient microbial life. In late October, the space agency reported that Perseverance had completed half of his flight heading to Red planet.
